Do you have an interest in dealing with criminal investigations and/or law enforcement? Are you interested in helping vulnerable people by tackling criminal activity? Are you motivated to deliver the right outcomes in challenging situations?
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) could be the place for you.
This is a hugely important public service, and our challenge is bigger than ever. DWP's Economic Serious and Organised Crime team is part of the Counter Fraud, Compliance and Debt Directorate that handles complex attacks on DWP benefits and grants, often by Organised Crime Groups.
We are looking for individuals with relevant experience to help combat organised criminality against DWP through prosecution and disruption activities.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to join our Counter Fraud and Compliance Directorate (CFCD), working within the Economic and Serious Organised Crime (ESOC) team. You will be at the forefront of tackling serious crimes linked to modern slavery, human trafficking, and identity fraud.
You will collaborate across multiple law enforcement agencies on high-profile, multi-million-pound criminal operations involving numerous suspects.
As criminal tactics evolve, investigators must stay updated with modern methods such as money laundering and cryptocurrencies to conceal illicit gains.
Your role will be diverse, with no two days the same, and you will have the authority to make decisions alongside multiple agencies.
What will you do as a Criminal Investigator?
* Lead criminal investigations into serious and organised crime against DWP to achieve successful outcomes.
* Collaborate with colleagues, law enforcement, and partners across government on joint operations.
* Brief law enforcement agencies and senior police officers on operational impacts, including press notifications and report completion.
* Organise and participate in arrests, searches, and seizures following legal procedures.
* Conduct interviews under caution in line with PACE legislation.
* Decide on appropriate legal powers and investigation timelines.
* Work with prosecution bodies to develop evidence and prepare court submissions.
* Manage disclosure processes and exhibit handling as required.
* Engage with legal professionals, understand case details, and progress court directions efficiently.
* Provide evidence in court and manage witnesses and victims during investigations and prosecutions.
* Coordinate with DWP colleagues to prevent benefit loss.
Responsibilities
As an Investigator, you will:
* Demonstrate integrity and professionalism.
* Possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with some roles involving management responsibilities.
* Lead investigations efficiently, collaborating with internal and external partners.
* Embrace creative approaches to prosecute and disrupt criminal activities.
* Communicate effectively, with excellent writing skills.
* Make prompt, sound decisions to protect public funds and victims.
* Plan, organise, delegate, and negotiate effectively.
* Represent DWP in multi-agency strategic meetings.
* Build knowledge of criminal tactics against government payment systems.
* Work well as part of a team and lead activities when needed.
* Deliver strategic briefings to large partner groups, including police and NCA.
