Therole of a Specialist Cardiac Physiologist is exciting and varied. This roleshould appeal to those wanting to enjoy the offerings of a renowned NSHCSaccredited tertiary cardiac centre. Ideal applicants should be competent inall areas of non invasive cardiology including but not limited tocardiopulomnary exercise testing, ambulatory analysis and tilt table testing.Applicants who have existing skills in other areas of Cardiology will beconsidered and a rotational role may be agreed for the successful applicant.Applications are also welcomed from those looking to develop their skills andcareer. Under the Annex 21 scheme the successful applicant will undertake afull 12 months supervised in house training programme and paid at 75% of band6 role until successful completion.

Main duties of the job
Thesuccessful applicants will perform and take a lead in all areas ofnon-invasive cardiology including exercise tolerance testing,cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, ambulatory analysis as well as tilt tabletesting. Ideal applicants will have existing competency in these areas withstate registration. Training can be provided for applicants seeking adevelopmental role (annex 21 band 6).
Leedschampions development, research and innovation. The non-invasive team utilisethe most update equipment and technology from Vyaire Medical, Philips,spacelabs and GE. There will be a requirement to work at both St JamesHospital and Leeds General Infirmary. The department supports MDTattendance,CPD, team meetings as well as multiple external conferences andcourses.
Thesuccessful applicants will join the non-invasive team on a rotational basisand there is opportunity to maintain or continue developing skills in otherareas of cardiology, for example echocardiography.
Successfulapplicants will work as part of a team to contribute to high quality andefficient services. We promote autonomous practice but support is alwaysavailable from highly specialist physiologists, clinical scientists and ourconsultant colleagues. The department has a monthly governance and auditmeeting where training is provided to keep up to date with any new services,standard operating procedures and audit programmes.

ClinicalDuties
To be professionally and legallyaccountable for all aspect of work, including the management of patients inyour care.
To undertake routine assessment ofinpatients and outpatients prior to a range of cardiac investigations toensure the patient is suitable for the investigation.
Participates in the on-call rota(7day/24hour) for acute emergencies in the Cardiac Catheter Lab and/or forthose with implantable cardiac devices and performs clinical duties out ofhours. This requires a high level of autonomy, often giving advice to medicalstaff with limited specialist knowledge thus directly influencing patientcare/outcomes.
Routinely undertakes assessment ofboth inpatients and outpatients prior to a range of cardiac investigationsand uses own discretion in order to ensure the patient is suitable for theinvestigation.
Provides clinical technical adviceto patients, carers and other members of the multidisciplinary team bothwithin and outside the cardiology department.
Carries out all aspects of clinicalwork as approved by the clinical management team.
Works as an autonomous practitionerwithin established departmental Standard Operating Procedures and codes ofpractice.
Communicates with all members ofthe multidisciplinary team and trust-wide staff to ensure the best possiblecare for patients by using negotiating, reassurance and persuasivenessskills.
Communicates information aboutroutine and complex cardiac investigations to patients and relatives/carersincluding children and those with learning and/or physical disabilities.
Calibrates and manipulates a widerange of complex, expensive technical equipment which processes, creates,updates and stores information.
Carries out a broad range offundamental and complex cardiac investigations and following analysis andinterpretation of physiological data, provides accurate and factual reports.
Clinical investigations would bedependent on the applicants skill set and area of clinical focus and mayinclude but are not limited to:
- Advanced ECGassessments/calculations
- Ambulatory and remote monitoringanalysis
- Cardiac angiography/interventionand heamodynamic assessment, both adult and paediatric

- Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise (CPX)
- Electrophysiology studies
- Permanent Pacemaker (PPM) andImplantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) implantations
- Physiologist led PPM and ICDfollow-up

- Therapeutic radiofrequencyablations

Demonstrates personal duty of carefor safe use of expensive and highly complex equipment and reports equipmentfaults in accordance with departmental policy.

Maintain professional registration;RCCP, AHCS, HCPC.
Responsible for maintaining owntechnical competencies in clinical areas including achieving professionalexams/membership appropriate to clinical area, e.g. BHRS, BSE etc.
Experience and knowledge ofspecialist cardiac investigations and techniques at postgraduate level.
Responsible for reporting clinicalincidents and adverse events to the appropriate responsible clinical servicemanager.
Expected to undertake informaltraining by means of periodic in-house assessments.
Responsible for formal mentorshipand input into coordination of training of designated junior staff andstudents.
Be an active member of thedepartmental clinical governance meetings and in-service training programmeby attendance at, and participation in, in-service training programmes,tutorials, individual training sessions, external courses and peer review.
Undertakes Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment (CPD) in accordance with Personal Development Plan (PDP) asdeveloped with Line Manager.
Attends and participates indepartmental staff meetings.
Maintains and develops currentknowledge of evidence based practice in each clinical area.

Required to exert moderate physicaleffort. Frequent transferring of patients and equipment on both trolleys andwheelchairs.
There is a frequent requirement forprolonged, but often predictable, periods of concentration.
Frequent exposure to highlydistressing situations, e.g. cardiac arrests during rescue coronaryintervention while the patient is having a heart attack.
Frequent exposure to highlyemotional circumstances, e.g. catheterisation of small babies who willinevitably die due to the nature of their congenital heart defects ordisabling cardiac devices of the terminally ill in whom lifesaving treatmenthas agreed to been withdrawn.
Requires a high level of manualdexterity and good hand to eye coordination in order to ensure the accurateapplication of a range of diagnostic tools.
Requires a high level of sensorycoordination in order to immediately recognise life threatening physiologicalsigns and then respond appropriately.
To comply with the Trusts manualhandling policy at all times.
Frequent exposure to unpleasantworking conditions on a regular daily basis, e.g. bodily fluids includingblood, sputum, vomit, urine, fleas and lice.
Occasional exposure to verbal andphysical aggression.
Deals sensitively with patients whohave high levels of anxiety and aggression caused by pain, dementia orlimited mobility.

Qualifications
* AHCS/HCPC registration, or ability to gain registration within 6-12 months.
* Cardiac Physiology degree; PTP, STP or ONC/HNC or HCS degree apprenticeship.
* SCST diploma and/or evidence of CPD
