An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and flexible Medicines Manager to join our busy Practice. Our practice requires a highly organised and motivated individual to provide comprehensive medication administration services to support the patients and Practice. Applicants should have excellent customer service, organisational and computer skills as well as have the ability to multitask and work under pressure at peak times. Applicants should have previous experience in pharmacy and or medicines management. Knowledge of medical terminology and experience of the EMIS Web computer system would be an advantage, although full training will be provided to the successful candidate. The ability to work well within our team and on your own initiative is essential. We will only be in contact with you if your application is successful.


Main duties of the job

To act as a focal point of communication between the GPs, receptionists, practice manager, patients and local chemist, as well as other members of the primary health care team, to ensure patients repeat medication is produced within the current protocols of the surgery.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* To process repeat medication requests sent in by patients using the various protocols in place.
* To ensure that patient queries on medication are highlighted to the relevant clinician.
* To work as part of the team providing support to the Practice to address areas within the current practice prescribing action plan.
* To improve the quality of repeat medication records by house‑keeping to align quantities, discontinue medication no longer needed and identify potential clinical issues to highlight to the pharmacist or GP.
* To develop effective working relationships with relevant community pharmacists.
* To help the practice achieve prescribing targets within the current prescribing Incentive scheme.
* To co‑ordinate medication reviews and support Practice recall systems.
* To effectively liaise with nursing and residential care homes.
* To develop, implement and co‑ordinate repeat dispensing


About us

St Georges Medical Centre is a busy Practice with a population size of 9500 patients.

We have a large clinical team of 5 GP partners, 4 Salaried GPs, 4 Practice Nurses, 1 Health care assistants and 1 phlebotomist. We are also a training Practice and currently have 5 GP trainees at the Practice, as well as medical students.

St Georges runs a dedicated community Ophthalmology clinic on site and hosts a number of community services, such as diabetes, podiatry, orthotics and minor surgery.

Job responsibilities

To act as a focal point of communication between the GPs, practice manager, receptionist team, patients, local chemists, as well as other members of the primary health care team, to ensure patients repeat medication is produced within the current protocols of the surgery.

To assist the practice to implement and maintain high quality, cost effective prescribing habits in line with current CCG and Practice prescribing policies and recommendations.

To develop systems and improve the patients journey where medicines are concerned.

MAINDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* To process all repeat medication requests sent in by patients using the various protocols in place.
* To liaise with patients and chemists regarding queries and requests.
* To ensure repeat medication is issued in line with the protocols that are already in place and ensure that any queries raised are dealt with quickly and correctly.
* To ensure that patient queries on medication are highlighted to the relevant GP.
* To regularly go through prescriptions not picked up and unlikely to be picked up as a result of the timescale, to remove the details from the patient records and then destroy the prescription.
* To work as part of the team providing support to the Practice to address areas within the current practice prescribing action plan.
* To co‑ordination and efficient operation of practice repeat prescribing systems.
* To address interface prescribing issues and promote use of the Significant Event Reporting System.
* To improve the quality of repeat medication records by housekeeping to align quantities, discontinue medication no longer needed and identify potential clinical issues to highlight to the pharmacist or GP.
* To develop effective working relationships with relevant community pharmacists.
* To help the practice achieve prescribing targets within the current prescribing Incentive scheme.
* To co‑ordinate medication review and develop an effective and robust recall system.
* To develop good working relationships with the Wirral Medicines Management Team.
* To attend ICB coordinated training events when made available.
* To effectively liaise with nursing and residential care homes.
* To develop, implement and co‑ordinate repeat dispensing (where applicable).
* To develop excellent skills in working with GP computer systems to generate reports and implement changes.
* To develop written materials, for example repeat prescribing protocols, patient information leaflets and practice information charts.
* To plan and implement innovative approaches to reduce medicines waste.

Person Specification


Experience

* Practical experience of working with others
* Experience of using own initiative
* Experience of working in a medicines management or pharmacy setting
* Experience of complex administration and record keeping in an office environment.
* Familiarity with a variety of windows‑based software and windows / network environment.
* Experience in using EMIS clinical software


Qualifications

* Good standard of general education
* GCE/GCSE Mathematics
* IT literate including experience in using Word and Excel at intermediate level.
