The Lead Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician will play a key role in delivering a high-quality, patient‑centred pharmacy service at the Newham Centre for Mental Health. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will coordinate and maintain safe and efficient medication supply systems, undertake medicines reconciliation, and support patients' independence through medicines management and self‑administration schemes. They will manage and develop pharmacy technicians and trainees, ensuring effective training, supervision, and competency assessment. The role includes supporting the discharge process, liaising with GPs and community pharmacies to ensure continuity of care, and contributing to quality improvement, audit, and service development initiatives. The post holder will also assist with dispensary duties at Mile End Hospital and maintain accredited checking status. This position requires strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills, with a commitment to patient safety, service quality, and continuous professional development.


Main duties of the job

Clinical and Medicines Management: Undertake medicines reconciliation, develop individual medicines management care plans, support self‑administration schemes, and assess patients' ability to manage their medicines safely and independently.

Medication Supply and Dispensary Duties: Coordinate and maintain efficient medication supply systems to wards and teams, manage top‑ups, assess Patients’ Own Drugs (PODs), and prepare discharge (TTA) medication in a timely manner.

Leadership and Staff Management: Line manage pharmacy technicians and assistants, create rotas, oversee training and development of staff and trainees, and ensure effective service delivery across clinical areas.

Audit, Quality Improvement, and Governance: Participate in audits, monitor performance indicators, contribute to service evaluation and improvement projects, and ensure compliance with CQC and Trust standards.

Education and Training: Support and deliver training to clinical and pharmacy staff, supervise pre‑registration trainees, and promote continuous professional development within the pharmacy team.

Job responsibilities

* To assist with the provision of a high quality pharmacy service to patients of the Trust
* To undertake general dispensary and distribution activities including ward based top ups.
* To assist the technical and professional staff in the day‑to‑day running of the Department
* Co‑ordinates and maintains medication supply to the wards and teams.
* Assesses identified patients individual pharmaceutical care needs within 72 hours of identification
* Initiates and completes a Medicines Management Care Plan for each identified patient
* Is a key member of the Multidisciplinary Team, participating in weekly team meetings in order to maximise patients potential for independent medicines management
* Ensures all documentation in regard to Medications Management on the unit is completed accurately
* To participate in dispensary duties (at Mile End Hospital) on a rota basis
* To manage the Technicians and be responsible for the training and development of student technicians.
* To prepare discharge medication (TTAs) in a timely and efficient manner
* To communicate discharge information to Community Pharmacies and GPs


Person Specification


Educational/ Qualification

* oBTEC/ City & Guilds/NVQ3 pharmacy or equivalent
* oRegional Accreditation for Checking dispensed items (ACT accreditation)
* oEducational Supervisor (or willing to work towards this)


Experience

* oExperience in hospital pharmacy post qualification
* oSuccess in a previous post requiring completion of work to deadlines
* oWorking within a multidisciplinary team
* oExperience in tutoring and training
* oDrug history taking
* oWard based clinical work
* oPrevious experience of audit
* oPrevious experience in providing clinical mental health services.
* oProducing reports
* oCreating rota


Knowledge/ Skills

* oAble to monitor, review and develop service standards
* oUse of Microsoft Excel/Word to intermediate level Able
* oGood written and oral communication skills
* oNumerate - able to perform simple calculations
* oAbility to work carefully with attention to detail
* oAbility to work unsupervised in an organised manner
* oAbility to plan work & meet targets
* oIdeas of how ward services may develop over the next few years and the factors that may affect these developments
