Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to the Nuffield‑funded project ‘Racial Equality Since Devolution: Divergences, Outcomes and Frontiers’ working with Professor Nasar Meer (PI). The successful candidate will co‑design and deliver an innovative mixed‑methods study mapping how policy and practice across England, Scotland and Wales have shaped racial equality since 1998; contribute to high‑quality publications and funding proposals; and help manage and direct a complex and impact‑oriented programme of research and engagement.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Take a leading role in conducting assigned research (individually and jointly) in line with project deliverables and School strategy, including refining research instruments and obtaining ethics approval.
* Document research outputs, including analysis and interpretation of data; maintain records and databases; and co‑draft technical/progress reports, policy briefs and papers.
* Establish and maintain your research profile and that of the University/School/Research Group via independent and joint publications of international quality and impact‑focused outputs.
* Survey the research literature and environment; understand project/subject challenges; and develop and implement an appropriate research strategy such as rapid realist review or mixed‑methods design.
* Contribute actively to team/group meetings, seminars/workshops and School research activities to enhance outputs and research culture.
* Present work at international and national conferences and internal/external seminars, colloquia and workshops (including Communities of Practice and policy summits).
* Develop and maintain collaborations across the research group/School/College/University and the wider community (devolved governments, local authorities, NGOs, professional bodies, Expert Advisory Group).
* Perform administrative tasks related to research group and School activities, including budgets/expenditure, risk management and scheduling.
* Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in mixed‑methods research and the substantive field.
* Engage in personal, professional and career development (e.g., University Researcher Development Programme).
* Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
* Contribute to enhancing the University’s international profile in line with Inspiring People, Changing the World.


Knowledge/Qualifications

* Essential: PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications) and track record of emerging independence within a research/professional environment.
* Comprehensive knowledge of current issues and future directions within the relevant research disciplines.
* Well‑developed working knowledge of research methods, technical models, equipment and techniques relevant to the project/discipline.
* Commitment to open research, including open data, open code, open educational resources and reproducible practices.
* Knowledge of specialist software for statistical and qualitative analysis (e.g., R, SPSS, Stata, NVivo).
* Desirable: Knowledge of project‑specific data sources; equality policy, devolved governance and racial justice research; impact dissemination techniques such as podcast production and interactive data‑visualisation.


Skills

* Essential: Ability to communicate specialist or highly technical material effectively both orally and in writing; effective organisation skills; research creativity and cross‑disciplinary collaboration; proven initiative and judgement to resolve methodological and logistical problems independently and in teams; willingness to travel within the UK as required.
* Desirable: Facilitation of stakeholder forums; podcast production; use of interactive data‑visualisation platforms.


Experience

* Essential: Planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines; track record of research outputs compatible with the School’s research profile; contributions to identifying and pursuing research funding; commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and supervisory experience.
* Desirable: Emerging national/international profile (invited talks, panels, advisory roles); organising multi‑stakeholder workshops/summits; engagement with policymakers, NGOs or think‑tanks; participation in national/international networks.


Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064‑£46,049 per annum, pro‑rata. This part‑time (28 hours per week, 0.8 FTE) post is fixed term until 31 December 2027.
