Job Description
The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, renowned for its dynamic performances and rich history, is looking to hire a new Orchestra Manager. This senior leadership role oversees the daily operations of the orchestra and the pastoral care of its 87 salaried musicians.
Working closely with the Director and Head of Artistic Planning & Production at MediaCityUK, the Orchestra Manager fosters a respectful, collaborative culture and ensures the smooth execution of the orchestra's schedule. The role involves coordination with internal committees, the Musicians' Union, and BBC teams, as well as overseeing HR systems, recruitment, and leading the Orchestra Management team during rehearsals, concerts, and recordings both in the UK and internationally.
Key qualifications include:
* Extensive experience working with classical musicians.
* Proven experience managing musical events.
* Strong management skills, including resolving interpersonal issues tactfully and diplomatically.

* Understanding of budgets with the ability to monitor and maintain departmental financial plans.

Preferred qualifications include:
* Knowledge of standard orchestral repertoire.
* Experience handling complex HR matters.
* Experience managing risk and safety, particularly concerning noise and live music sector safety regulations.
Job Responsibilities
* Manage the daily operations of the orchestra.
* Build trust and maintain effective communication with musicians and staff.
* Ensure compliance with employment rules and regulations as per agreements with the Musicians' Union and BBC.
* Line manage orchestra personnel, addressing personnel issues promptly.
* Collaborate with MU Representatives and Health and Safety Committee on relevant matters, including union agreements.
* Oversee risk assessments related to orchestra activities, especially regarding Noise in the Workplace regulations.
* Monitor orchestral and production costs against budgets, working with the Director and Business Accountant during the annual budgeting process.
