Acute Brain Injury Clinical Nurse Specialist
The Royal London Hospital is one of Europe's largest major trauma centres, and is nationally and internationally recognised for its work in advancing trauma care.
An exciting opportunity has arisen as a band 6 Acute Brain Injury Clinical Nurse Specialist on a one year fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. The role supports the Acute Brain Injury nurse specialist team in providing care and support to patients and families, and represents the Acute Brain Injury service across the hospital in MDTs and family meetings.
The role demands high level communication skills and the ability to manage high levels of distress displayed by patients and families. The candidate should be passionate about supporting the unique brain injury patient group, who often present with complex issues both inpatient and outpatient.
The candidate should be organised, efficient, and confident in coordinating a caseload of patients with support from the Acute Brain Injury nurse specialist team. Specific experience caring for patients with acute brain injury and a clear understanding of complex discharge planning is required.
The candidate should have participated in audit and be comfortable with clinical research concepts. Microsoft Excel and Access skills are required to support the current team with data collection.
Main duties of the job
* Deliver specialist acute brain injury nurse advice within the Acute Brain Injury Service.
* Coordinate a caseload of patients/clients.
* Promote patient‑centred care and approaches, ensuring that patients and families are fully informed about treatment.
* Promote evidence‑based clinical nursing practice, in line with current guidelines, policies and protocols.
* Establish clear lines of communication within the multidisciplinary team, ensuring a cohesive and holistic management of patients.
* Link with healthcare teams to increase knowledge and facilitate the care of this group of people in the community, local hospitals and rehabilitation centres.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse
* NMC registration
* BSc
* Working towards further education (PG Cert/MSc)
* Relevant course in Neurosurgery
* Leadership/management course
Experience
* Experience in acute settings (e.g., Neuroscience / ITU / ED)
* Experience in end‑of‑life care
* Experience in managing patients with acute brain injury
* Experience of using reflective practice techniques
Knowledge
* Up to date knowledge of professional issues
* Understanding of clinical governance
* Good knowledge of acute brain injury
