The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a technology institute for life science, creating innovative technologies that transform our understanding of life. We are a charity created through a joint venture of its members and are funded by the UK Research Innovation through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced molecular virologist/biologist to join our coronavirus project team to develop cell-based models for analysing virus entry and trafficking, as part of our Science Challenge on how pathogens interact with human cells. Our aim is to discover new ways of detecting, preventing and combatting human infectious diseases by understanding the mechanisms by which viruses interact with human cells and tissues. Experience working with viral systems is essential; expertise in the development of live virus assays and an interest in structural cell biology are desirable.

As a Research Associate at the Franklin, you will apply your scientific knowledge and skills to our goal of understanding coronavirus mechanisms, bringing independent, creative science to our project team. Through this work, you will build scientific independence, develop new science and leadership skills, and establish a growing reputation externally.

Key Responsibilities

As a Research Associate, you will:

* Plan and conduct experiments, analyse and interpret results, and supervise the delivery of outputs (research report, patent application) in the area of coronavirus interaction mechanisms.
* Work independently and within a project team, contributing to wider projects around key Challenges.
* Lead major contributions to outputs from research including papers, patents, and both internal and external presentations.
* Support and develop others, including day-to-day supervision of students or visitors in areas related to your research.
* Progress through supervised, staged development towards scientific independence, with opportunities to further develop science and skills/experience.
* Enhance your research through collaboration with other researchers and actively contribute to idea exchange within your network.
* Understand, interpret, create, and communicate effectively within a research context.
* Develop search and discovery skills and techniques.
* Be supervised by a Scientist/Senior Scientist in delivering research outputs, either within a project or Challenge, or as an early career development fellow.
