About the Role
As a Principal Water Quality Modeller, you will be a senior technical resource who guides junior staff and enhances our offering to water utilities, industrial clients, government agencies and local authorities. You will act as technical lead on a range of water quality projects, collaborating with hydrologists, network modellers and engineers.
Principal Accountabilities
* Conceptualise and scope modelling approaches, considering risks and opportunities.
* Build and check water‑quality models for studies such as integrated water‑management plans, permitting studies and EIAs.
* Produce and review high‑quality technical reports documenting model build and uncertainties.
* Lead and contribute to tenders from innovative one‑off projects to multi‑million pound framework contracts.
* Mentor staff to support their professional development.
* Build relationships with clients and across technical disciplines.
* Keep up‑to‑date with legislation and guidelines affecting our services.
* Use project‑management systems to deliver outputs within agreed programme and budget.
* Work closely with clients and technical teams to deliver fluvial and coastal surface‑water quality projects.
Qualifications
* Expertise in water‑quality science, including knowledge of compounds such as cryptosporidium, PFAS, geosmin and disinfection by‑products and effective treatment.
* Significant experience in fluvial and/or coastal water‑quality modelling, including Environment Agency requirements for UPM or WINEP studies.
* Experience with mass‑balance calculations (flow‑weighted, Monte Carlo) and hydrological assessment tools such as REFH2, FEH.
* Practical knowledge of scripting (Python, R, Anaconda) and strong GIS skills (QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo).
* Master’s degree (or equivalent) in hydrology, engineering, mathematics or related discipline.
* Experience in technical project delivery, from bid preparation to project management, and strong report‑writing skills.
