SCIENCE TEACHER (full or part time) for a small, independent, specialist school, set within Afon Goch Children's Homes.
Can you support a child who has missed out on significant amounts of education due circumstances out of their control? A child who is very insecure, often traumatised, displaying reactive behaviours? A child who has lost touch with the enjoyment, satisfaction and benefit of education? A child who has lesser aspirations, but has much more potential than they expect of themselves?
Ysgol Caban Aur (YCA) is a registered independent, specialist school; providing education for up to two learners aged 11- 16yrs (Y7-Y11) who now live in one of the two, therapeutic children's homes. Because many of the children have missed out on significant educational opportunities, they often need a lot of individual teaching support for them to regain confidence, manage their behaviours, 'fill-in' their gaps in knowledge and understanding, and work towards improving their self-belief. Some children have gone on to sit GCSEs and move on to college. Other children require to become competent in basic educational life-skills. YCA teachers are equally committed to making the difference for the complete range of individual children's needs.
Could you be part of helping make that difference?
You will need to satisfy many of the expectations by being:
✓ Qualified; have 'Qualified Teacher Status' (secondary or primary).
✓ Experienced; having taught a range of ages and abilities.
✓ Flexible; willing to teach a variety of subjects (even for the first time)
✓ Resilient; be able to remain calm, supportive and caring, whilst motivating, nurturing and challenging pupils to achieve their best.
✓ Creative; identify barriers to learning and overcome them. Be creative with the curriculum, resources, and presentation to engage and motivate the individual learner.
✓ Child-focussed; Commitment to safeguarding children. Develop and sustain good personal relationships. Remain positive and retain a sense of humour.
✓ Collaborative; work cooperatively as a member of a small 'school' team, but also with a wider 'care' team. Be committed to the partnerships that support the school. Be a strong team member.
✓ Organised; Good organisation to plan, prepare, resource, and deliver the curriculum.
✓ Involved; attend and support special events organised by AGCH, such as: 'Jollifications', children's birthday parties, Christmas, 'graduations', end-of-placement events.
There will be ongoing training: particularly in behaviour management techniques and understanding the reasons behind behaviour, and so how to manage that.
You will need to have a car (and business insurance) available to drive the children between sites, or on local educational visits, if occasionally required.
