We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and forward-thinkingWaste and Recycling Managerto lead our Waste and Recycling Services team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering high-quality, sustainable waste management services for the residents and businesses of Sunderland.
As part of the City Services Directorate, the Waste and Recycling Manager will be responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of our waste collection, recycling, and disposal services. You will work closely with colleagues across Local Services, Bereavement Services, Fleet, Highways, and Property Maintenance to ensure integrated and efficient service delivery.
You will lead a dedicated team, driving service improvement through innovation, data-led decision making, and a commitment to the principle ofFirst Time Right. A systems thinking approach, working collaboratively with frontline staff to identify and address inefficiencies and outdated practices will be key to your success.
The role includes operational responsibility for developing and implementing the Council’s Waste and Recycling Strategy in line with the Sunderland City Plan 2025–2035.
Collaboration is at the heart of this role. You will work alongside fellow service managers and build strong, supportive relationships across the council to enable constructive change and continuous improvement.
The postholder will also participate in thewinter maintenance duty officer rota, contributing to the resilience and responsiveness of our wider services.
