Consultant Respiratory & General Internal Medicine

This post is a replacement for a Consultant Respiratory physician with a specialist interest in interstitial lung disease (ILD). Candidates with defined sub‑specialty expertise in ILD or who are prepared to develop this area are welcome.
Main duties of the job
This is a 10‑PA replacement post for a Consultant Respiratory physician at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The role combines inpatient care, outpatient clinics, day‑case bronchoscopy and pleural lists. Successful applicants will be supported to develop the service, including expanding ILD care, involvement with Oxford and the evolving anti‑fibrotic service, and participation in research and teaching.
About us
Respiratory Medicine at Royal Berkshire Hospital runs its own dedicated department for clinics, full respiratory physiology support, and inpatient care. We have a 50‑bed inpatient unit with 8 beds in a Respiratory Support Unit and a purpose‑built pleural procedure room. The team works closely with thoracic radiologists, lung oncologists, pathologists, and clinical nurse specialists. Inpatient and elective thoracic surgery is provided by Guy's Hospital.
Job responsibilities
Key duties include:
* 2 × weekly general respiratory clinics and 2 × weekly ILD clinics, including hot slots for deteriorating patients.
* Running the monthly ILD MDT and attending the monthly rheumatology MDT and the Oxford ILD MDT.
* Participation in the bronchoscopy rota.
* Triaging and reviewing incoming referrals.
* Managing the specialist respiratory inpatient ward on a rotational basis (4 weeks in 18).
* Contributing to the respiratory of the day rota.
* Weekend cover of the respiratory ward (08:30–14:30), monitoring new patients, and reviewing sick patients flagged by nursing staff.
* Supervising and educating ward junior doctors and final‑year medical students, providing on‑the‑job clinical teaching.
* Participation in general medicine on‑call with the following schedule:
o Weekdays: 15:00–22:30 on‑site, 1 in 22 frequency; an overnight non‑residential shift.
o Weekends: 08:00–20:00 on‑site both Saturday and Sunday, 1 in 22 frequency, overnight non‑residential on‑call.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* Full registration with the GMC and Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom or equivalent.
* Higher degree (PhD/MD) submitted or awarded.
Clinical Experience
* Fully trained in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine with knowledge of all aspects of general respiratory patient care.
* Experience at SpR or Consultant level within the NHS.
* Previous responsibility for clinical governance and adherence to GMC Good Medical Practice.
* Fully trained in bronchoscopy, EBUS, and thoracoscopy.
* Independent in ultrasound‑guided biopsy, including pleural and lymph‑node procedures.
