An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Council’s Major Projects Finance Team, in the role of Accountancy Officer. We’re looking for an enthusiastic aspiring accounting technician with experience of working in a Financial environmental and with related IT systems.
The post will contribute to the work of the Major Projects team and the Services we support, which have their roots across the whole of the Council. This role will complement our support for Housing and HRA, and wider projects as the need arises. You will be part of a high performing team with the opportunity to work in an exciting and diverse environment. You will help inform decisions and promote new ways of working.
Experience of MS Excel is essential. We are looking for applicants who want to make a difference and push themselves to grow, develop and thrive and for the successful candidate as the position is part of a career-graded scheme.

The Opportunity
In the role of Accountancy Officer, here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact:
Working closely with accountancy colleagues, services, and other professionals, you will:
• Provide general financial advice and guidance to Council staff, including budget managers in relation to financial transactions and controls, through meetings both virtual and face to face, and to other officers and members of the public on matters of financial administration and basic accounting and budgeting queries.
• Produce financial forecasts for budget managers including interrogation of financial ledgers and a dialogue with staff.
• Participate in the introduction and development of new systems and procedures including those based on IT.
• Process financial transactions to ensure that the Council’s financial ledger can produce final year end accounts adhering to international financial reporting standards.
• Prepare reconciliations and to ensure that the Council’s financial ledger is maintained in support of the final year end accounts.
• Assist in the production of statutory grant claims and returns.
• Assist in the supervision and training of junior staff
About You
To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have…
Demonstrable experience of:
- Relevant accounting and budgeting experience.
- Relevant budget monitoring experience
- Experience of working in a finance environment
- Experience of working with multiple IT systems.
Possess the following skills and knowledge:
- General knowledge of accounting practices and concepts
- Use of IT packages including Microsoft Office Excel and Word
- Good numeracy skills, including experience of data manipulation
- Good written and oral communication skills.
The following personal qualities and other factors:
- Ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
- Able to demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm and self motivation
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Ability to work effectively with non-financial managers
- GCSE Grades A–C including Maths and English or equivalent
- Ability to be flexible in approach to work
