Band 4 - Medical Secretary, Stroke and Care of the Elderly

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Medicine Division in West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust based at Watford General Hospital. We are looking for a Medical Secretary/Pathway Navigator for 37.5 hours per week.
The successful applicant will be proactive, forward‑thinking, highly motivated and enthusiastic, working with consultants, nursing, management and colleagues to co‑ordinate waiting lists, book outpatient appointments and protect the patient pathway in accordance with Trust pathways.
Main duties
* Provide medical secretarial support to one or more stroke/care of the elderly consultants and cross‑cover in colleagues' absence.
* Serve as the first professional point of contact for patients.
* Handle telephone enquiries from GPs, patients and staff in a courteous and diplomatic manner and pass appropriate messages in a timely fashion.
* Communicate highly sensitive information to patients and consultants.
* Maintain efficient and effective administration of stroke & care of the elderly clinics, cancelling and amending clinic lists following instruction from clinicians, ASM and ADM.
* Perform RTT tracking and validation.
Person Specification
Education and qualifications
* Good level of education (e.g., GCSE level or equivalent).
* AMSPAR Medical Terminology.
* RSA III typing.
Knowledge
* Medical terminology.
* Knowledge of Cerner and other Trust IT systems.
* Knowledge of NHS policies.
Experience
* Previous medical secretary experience.
* Previous NHS experience in a secretarial role.
