We are seeking a highly experienced Lead Design Manager to oversee the design and coordination of a major 400/132kV GIS substation project. This critical role will involve leading a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring technical excellence, budget control, and effective stakeholder management. The successful candidate will act as the primary design authority and coordinate between the Uxbridge Moor site and our head office in Kentish Town.
Location: Split between Uxbridge Moor site (adjacent to Iver Substation) and Head Office in Kentish Town
Working Arrangement: 3–4 days per week on-site or in the Kentish Town office, with 1–2 days remote working subject to project requirements
Employment Type: PAYE only
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the design of a 400/132kV GIS substation scope of works in accordance with National Grid standards
* (Desirable) Fulfil the role of Lead Contractor Design Assurance Engineer (LCDAE) as per National Grid requirements
* Manage a team of Design Managers and Design Coordinators across all disciplines
* Coordinate interfaces between all engineering disciplines to ensure design integration
* Organise and lead design meetings, ensuring accurate capture of minutes and follow-up actions
* Provide regular progress updates to both functional and project delivery managers
* Manage and track design budgets and programme schedules
* Report and advise on project progress, risks, and challenges
* Input into commercial management including Early Warnings (EWs), Compensation Events (CENs), and Project Manager Instructions (PMIs)
* Maintain and update decision, assumption, and change logs
* Take ownership of project hazards and risks; lead hazard identification and review sessions
* Be accountable for the performance and ongoing development of the design team
Candidate Requirements:
* Proven experience in substation design management, ideally at 400/132kV GIS level
* Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and guide multidisciplinary teams
* Familiarity with National Grid standards and procedures (LCDAE experience preferred but not essential)
* Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder management abilities
* Demonstrated experience in managing budgets, programmes, and commercial inputs
* High level of accountability, initiative, and organisational skills
