Health Care Assistant – NHS General Practice – Devon and Norfolk
Role Overview
The role supports the practice nursing team in delivering nursing services. The healthcare assistant will provide clinical support, including health promotion, preventive care, and patient education. General Practice experience is essential.

We are a forward‑thinking GP surgery serving a registered patient population of 13,146. Our multidisciplinary team includes experienced GPs, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, healthcare assistants, and pharmacy staff. We are dedicated to high‑standard patient care in a supportive, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake new patient health checks and baseline observations (pulse, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate).
* Support the practice nurse with health promotion, chronic disease clinic management and vaccination programmes (flu, COVID).
* Carry out venepuncture, wound care, dressing changes, BMI and ECG assessments.
* Facilitate routine and 24‑hour blood pressure monitoring and advise patients accordingly.
* Administer ICU and specimen collection, ensuring correct record‑keeping and onward transport.
* Assist during minor operations and maintain clinical environment (stock, fridge cleaning, sharps disposal).
* Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.
Secondary Responsibilities
* Participate in practice audit and local initiatives to improve service delivery.
* Support shared learning sessions and participate in professional development activities.
* Complete opening and closing procedures in line with the duty rota.
Essential Qualifications
* Healthcare qualification (Level 3 or 4) or working towards attainment.
* Experience in ECG, venepuncture and new‑patient medical checks (height, weight, BP, pulse).
Desirable Qualifications
* Review of chronic conditions.
* Wound care and removal of sutures/staples.
* Administration of injections.
