The Role
As a Maritime Structural Engineer, you will work on a major programme of work for QinetiQ delivering testing and evaluation consultancy services in the area of hydrodynamics, submarine escape and evacuation and maritime structures.
Day-to-day, you’ll will be key to delivery of technical projects relating to the design and analysis of submarines structures. The role will include using numerical tools (FEA, Matlab, Python) to look into aspect of submarine structures to enable the current UK fleet to operate and improve the tools and design for future platforms. At the culmination of each project, you will be responsible for the development of key deliverables, design reports and documentation, as well as briefing the customer on the work and the findings.
Whilst the role has a specific focus, there will be opportunities to be involved in the group’s wider work streams, which include propulsor and propeller design, dynamic stability, quasi-static stability, seakeeping, resistance and propulsion of surface ships and submarines.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Provide effective leadership and coordination of the engineering and technical activities to deliver specific projects
* Combine subject matter expertise and sound engineering judgement to solve problems
* Breakdown complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work
* Manage the project/programme to undertake the work within the agreed quality, timescale and budget
* Give technical presentations and talk knowledgably about the work conducted in external forums, including conferences and in customer meetings
Essential experience of the Maritime Structural Engineer:
* Demonstrable experience with Finite Element Analysis
* Understanding of structural assessment, preferably maritime structures
Essential qualifications for the Maritime Structural Engineer:
* BEng / MEng in Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or Structural Engineering, or equivalent knowledge from previous experience
* Chartered Engineer, or working towards Chartership
