About Us
Climate-i is a climate tech start-up on a mission to reduce the world’s most potent and fastest growing emissions: fluorinated gases, also known as ‘F-gases’. We are building innovative hardware systems from the ground up, combining deep technical problem-solving with a mission-driven approach. Our first products address leaks of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), the world’s most potent greenhouse gas (GWP 24,300) from the electricity grid where it is used as a high-voltage interruption and insulation gas. We are a small, friendly team developing technology which will have a large real-world impact. If you join us, you will directly shape early-stage climate-positive innovation.
The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join Climate-i at an early stage in the company’s life and work directly with our CTO on real-world climate challenges. You will make a major contribution to advancing our technology to capture SF6 emissions through designing, building & testing prototypes as well as research and product development. Day-to-day work will be in our workshop in Falmouth, Cornwall but you will also travel to customer sites across the UK to understand system requirements and install and monitor product trials as we prepare to commercialise our technology.
We currently have the funding required to offer the successful candidate a one-year contract. In the course of the next 12-months we hope to secure additional funds which will enable us to extend the contract subject to the job-holder’s performance and the skill requirements of the company which may evolve over time.
The salary we offer will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience.
Key Responsibilities
* Collaborate with the CTO on the design and development of gas-handling system components.
* Help specify, source, and select components suitable for high-pressure and corrosive environments.
* Assemble, test, and iterate on prototype systems and subsystems.
* Conduct technical research and maintain accurate engineering documentation.
What We’re Looking For
You will be a practical problem-solver with a passion for climate innovation, engineering and design. You will enjoy hands-on work and be comfortable engaging with a range of technical disciplines. You may be a Mechanical, Chemical, or Process Engineering graduate or someone with experience in Industrial Design. You will have a successful track record of making things or working in a practical setting.
Essential:
* Solid foundation in one or more of the following disciplines: thermodynamics; fluid mechanics; chemical processes; applied physics; industrial design.
* Comfortable with both hands-on work and theoretical calculations.
* Experienced working in a practical setting (e.g. on prototyping, mechanical systems, or assembling hardware).
* Adept at problem solving.
* Comfortable talking on the phone to suppliers.
* Able to interpret and apply standards and regulations to ensure safety and good design.
* Proactive, curious, and adaptable to the challenges of working in a start-up environment.
* Able to travel across the UK with overnight stays initially monthly but more frequently during product trials with customers.
* Comfortable working at height e.g. on scaffolding or gantries accessed via ladders.
* Right to work in the UK by the commencement of employment.
Desirable:
* A clean UK driving license.
* Experience working on electricity substations and/or with F-gases.
* Knowledge and experience of electronics & coding (at a prototyping level).
* Experience with a CAD package for drawing basic parts to send for manufacture.
Why Join Us?
* Work on climate technology with real-world impact.
* Work alongside experienced engineers and shape early-stage innovation.
* Small, friendly team.
* Flexible working hours, with potential for a longer-term role.
