The Opportunity
As Assistant Payroll Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day delivery of payroll services across a varied client portfolio, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional service standards. You will work closely with the Payroll Manager, providing leadership and support to junior team members while helping to drive the continued success and growth of the payroll function.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage and process a portfolio of client payrolls from start to finish across weekly, fortnightly, and monthly pay cycles.
* Ensure payrolls are delivered accurately, compliantly, and within agreed deadlines.
* Act as a key point of contact for clients, delivering an outstanding level of service and resolving complex payroll queries.
* Identify opportunities to enhance payroll services and actively promote additional offerings both internally and externally.
* Support, mentor, and develop junior payroll professionals through coaching, training, one-to-ones, and performance reviews.
* Assist the Payroll Manager with operational oversight, team management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
* Stay up to date with payroll legislation and best practice to ensure ongoing compliance across all client accounts.
What We're Looking For
Essential Experience & Skills
* Proven experience processing end-to-end payrolls within a bureau, accountancy practice, or multi-client environment.
* Strong communication and client relationship management skills.
* Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.
* High level of IT literacy, including Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
* A proactive and collaborative approach with a passion for delivering exceptional service.
Desirable Experience & Qualifications
* Experience working with multiple payroll software platforms.
* Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and compliance requirements.
* Advanced Excel and spreadsheet skills.
* Previous experience supporting or mentoring team members.
