British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Patent Attorney in Globe House, London.
This role involves providing legal counsel and materials to support and execute the Group Patent legal strategy, informing business decisions, maximizing commercial opportunities, ensuring legal compliance, and mitigating risks.
Responsibilities include:
* Providing counsel on patent risks and opportunities across areas of responsibility, and implementing mitigation strategies.
* Drafting and prosecuting patents within assigned areas.
As a member of the BAT Group Patents team, you will contribute to and execute work that:
* Provides value-added service to management and teams;
* Delivers high-quality, solution-oriented advice.
Your key responsibilities will include:
* Offering legal advice to facilitate business and protect the Groups interests, managing patent risks/opportunities across various commercial areas.
* Advising internal functions on patent risks and opportunities, and collaborating to develop mitigation or follow-up plans.
* Establishing and maintaining a robust patent portfolio, implementing filing and prosecution strategies to maximize competitive advantage.
* Providing clear, commercially focused advice on key patent issues.
* Managing relationships with external IP service providers for high-quality, efficient service.
* Building collaborative relationships within BAT based on mutual trust.
* Executing key processes, protocols, and governance as directed by Senior Counsel, Patents.
* Promoting a culture of risk management and IP policy compliance globally.
What are we looking for?
Experience Required:
* Experience in managing patent risks and executing filing and prosecution strategies to maximize innovation value.
* Commercial acumen with understanding of FMCG businesses and strategic support capabilities.
Technical/Functional Skills:
* Ability to analyze complex legal and business issues strategically.
* Knowledge of patent laws and related legal areas, including trademarks, copyrights, designs, competition, and data protection laws.
* Skill in assessing IP clauses in commercial agreements with attention to detail.
Leadership Skills:
* Effective communication skills, interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and decision-making abilities.
* Ability to manage priorities and work across functions to build consensus.
Education / Qualifications:
* Qualified European or national patent attorney with up to 5 years’ experience in patents, including drafting, prosecution, and contentious matters. Candidates close to qualification will also be considered.
