Job Summary
The respiratory physiology service has an opportunity to appoint a motivated, enthusiastic individual to the role of Senior Clinical Physiologist for a fixed‑term maternity cover post. This hybrid role involves work between the lung function labs and the integrated care service, supporting community respiratory clinics. The multidisciplinary team includes physiologists, clinical scientists, administrators and consultants. In the lung function component, the post-holder performs a range of standard and complex lung function tests and may work in the Sleep Centre at Charing Cross Hospital to develop or maintain skills in respiratory polygraphy analysis and CPAP compliance clinics. The integrated care component involves supporting community teams with ARTP accreditation, portfolios, and coordinating community spirometry clinics and diagnostic hubs. Applicants should have prior lung function testing experience, a BSc in Healthcare Science (respiratory major) or equivalent and ideally ARTP practitioners examination or working towards AHCS equivalence.
Main Duties
* Perform procedures unsupervised, gaining accurate and clinically valuable measurements:
o Dynamic lung volumes by spirometry and flow‑volume loops
o Static lung volumes by helium dilution
o Transfer factor for carbon monoxide by single‑breath method
o Assessment of bronchodilator response with short and long‑acting drugs
o Exercise limitation by 6‑minute walk test with oximetry and BORG evaluation
o Training and assessment of inhaler techniques
* Perform procedures under supervision until competence is achieved:
o Hypoxic challenge (fitness to fly)
o Bronchial challenge using nebulised methacholine
o Blood gas analysis
o Follow‑up patients on CPAP/NIV therapy, troubleshoot problems, alter treatment if required
o NIV support; specialist advice in liaison with lead NIV consultant and nursing staff
o Practical training in NIV (BiPAP machine set‑up and mask fit) for nurses and senior house officers
* Provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the clinical setting, Trust‑wide and externally.
* Comply with Trust policies and procedures within the multi‑disciplinary team.
* In conjunction with the service manager, assist in identifying areas of service development.

Education
* Essential: Appropriate degree/equivalent.
* Progress to state/RCCP registration.
* CPD by attendance at internal and external lectures, seminars and courses.
* Relevant practical experience.
Desirable
* Specialist knowledge across a range of procedures within specialised area of respiratory medicine.
* Registered with ARTP/RCCP.
Skills & Abilities
* Trained and competent at a range of complex diagnostic tests.
* Excellent patient care and communication skills.
