Clinical Healthcare Support Worker, Band 3 Emergency

The Emergency Department Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) plays a vital role in delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to patients presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergency conditions.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the HCSW supports Registered Nurses, Doctors, and Allied Health Professionals in the assessment, monitoring, and care of patients across all areas of the Emergency Department, including majors, minors, resuscitation, and triage.

The role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, maintaining professionalism, empathy, and efficiency while ensuring patient dignity, comfort, and safety at all times.

Additional working pattern details: Expected to work both days and nights.


Main duties of the job


Clinical Support

* Assist with patient care under the supervision of registered staff
* Perform basic observations (e.g. temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturations)
* Support with ECGs, blood sampling (where trained), and point‑of‑care testing
* Support infection prevention and control practices


Patient Care & Experience

* Provide personal care, ensuring dignity and respect
* Offer reassurance and emotional support to patients and relatives
* Assist with patient flow, including transfers and discharges
* Ensure patients are comfortable


Operational Support

* Maintain a clean, safe, and well‑stocked clinical environment
* Assist in managing corridor care safely when required


Communication and Team Working

* Escalate concerns promptly
* Communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues
* Contribute to a positive team culture and supportive environment


Safety and Governance

* Adhere to Trust policies, procedures, and professional standards
* Support accurate documentation and record keeping
* Recognise and escape safeguarding concerns


Skills and Attributes

* Compassionate, caring, and patient-focused
* Able to work under pressure in a busy ED environment
* Good communication and interpersonal skills
* Observant and proactive in recognising patient needs
* Flexible and adaptable across different ED areas
* Team player with a positive attitude

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Educated to GCSE grade C or equivalent in key skills level 2 or functional skills level 2 numeracy and literacy
* NVQ/QCF in Health or Health and Social Care Level 2 [or equivalent] Care Certificate


Experience

* Experience (through placement or employment) of working in an acute clinical environment


Knowledge/Skills

* Good communication skills, able to communicate respectfully verbally and in writing.
* Ability to work well as a member of the department
* Ability to follow instructions and organise your work.
* Caring and compassionate nature. Knowledge of how to respect individuality and diversity of patients, their carers and your colleagues.
* Ability to learn new skills
