Overview
The Directorate of Laboratory Medicine, also known as Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), encompasses Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Cytogenetics. EPA provides a range of analysis of blood, body fluids and tissues for the Hospital inpatient and outpatient population, all the GP’s in Norfolk and other neighbouring Trusts. The majority of samples arrive in the central reception area where they are sorted, registered on the lab computer systems and prepared for analysis.
Responsibilities
* Sample sorting and re-directing
* Checking samples for suitability
* Registering samples in the Lab computer systems
* Labeling and preparing samples for analysis
* Preparation includes use of centrifuges, balances and pipettes
* Receive, sort, and register patient and specimen details in the Laboratory Information System
* Separate and store blood and other specimens for current and future laboratory testing
* File and scan report cards and other documents
* Answer telephone enquiries from general practitioners and hospital departments concerning details of specimens and patient information
* Pack and send laboratory specimens referred to other laboratories
* Assist with patient enquiries
* Act as receptionist for laboratory visitors, etc.
A good deal of manual dexterity is required, with an ability to work carefully and accurately and to use own initiative.
This post will be part of the departmental 24-hour shift rota, including 1 week in 8 of night shifts and 1 weekend in 4.
Full time 37.5 hours per week
