Specialist Anaesthetist – Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust seeks a permanent Specialist Anaesthetist to contribute to an award‑winning Anaesthesia Department within a broad range of surgical services, including elective, emergency, trauma and robotic procedures. The post is eligible for part‑time or flexible working arrangements based on clinical need.
Job Overview
• 10 programmed activities (PAs) each week, with potential part‑time or flexible provision. • Full clinical responsibility for anaesthesia administration, pre‑operative assessment, post‑operative visits, teaching, audit and leadership of specialist time.
Main Responsibilities
* Provide safe and effective general, regional and procedural anaesthesia independently for all patients (stage 3 capability, RCoA 2021 Anaesthetics Curriculum).
* Deliver pre‑operative assessment and post‑operative care, including audit and quality improvement.
* Teach and supervise trainees, contributing to departmental educational objectives.
* Participate in clinical governance, audit, and NHS quality improvement projects.
* Use NHS clinical information systems and patient databases to support clinical care.
Education and Registration
* Full registration with the GMC or eligibility for registration.
* Postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesia (desirable).
* Membership of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent (desirable).
* Current Advanced Life Support training (desirable).
Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills
* Minimum of 12 years medical work, with at least 6 years in relevant specialty doctor or SAS grades.
* Experience within the NHS and familiarity with NHS management structures (desirable).
* Evidence of clinical leadership and experience in audit and quality improvement.
* Strong IT skills and ability to use patient and hospital databases.
* Commitment to patient-centered care and user involvement.

* Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, in English.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
* Willingness to take responsibility, demonstrate appropriate authority and manage own time effectively.
