The role will be the Team Lead for specimen reception, dissection, and main lab of Cellular Pathology, you will be involved with developing this role to provide continuous improvement for the cancer diagnostic service and cancer targets for the patients in central Lancashire.
Main duties of the job
Your duties will include supporting the team in the day to day organisation, management and supervision of a laboratory area to ensure delivery of a timely, quality service diagnostic service in the specimen reception, dissection, Mohs service, and main histology lab (tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, IQC and case assembly)
1. You will be expected to take an active role in the training and development of staff and to have good communication skills.
2. Aid in the procurement, validation and implementation of reagents, consumables and equipment and methodology.
3. Trouble shoot issues finding resolutions. Manage the Quality management system and meet UKAS 15189:2022 standards.
4. You will be expected to participate in the Senior management meetings to understand and support delivery of the operational services as well as deputise in the absence of the Lead BMS and other Team Leaders

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties to include but not be limited to:
5. To liaise and co-operate with other team leaders to ensure efficient delivery of the service.
6. To direct staff regarding technical and work issues.
7. Discussion of problems and possible solutions with the Lead BMS, and to relay solutions to other members of staff
8. Dealing with telephone enquiries from nurses, clinicians, healthcare practitioners, giving technical advice on results and use of the service.
9. Liaise by telephone with engineers for analytical equipment to facilitate fault diagnosis and repair or replacement of parts to enable continuation of service if possible without engineers visit.
10. Regularly meet with section staff to discuss current departmental and section issues
11. Responsible for Inventory management within the section to ensure efficient operation and continuity of service and ensure replenishment of stocks.
12. Assist in the selection of new and replacement equipment
Scientific and Technical
13. With the help of research material, publications, relevant professional bodies and other organisations involved in patient safety, advise the directorate about developments and new practices.
14. To evaluate and develop new techniques and equipment.
15. Confirm with relevant information sources: the nature and purpose of the routine biomedical investigations/interventions required and any particular factors to take into account and selects appropriate methods, techniques, processes and equipment
16. Check and confirm the identify and quality of specimens/samples at all relevant stages in line with established procedures and protocols
17. Handle and deal with specimens/samples in a way which:
- is consistent with the indicated degree of risk or urgency
- maintains the required quality and integrity
- maintains their unique identification and their links to relevant records/documentation
- is appropriate to the nature and stage of the investigation/intervention

Person specification
Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
18. MSC in Biomedical Science or Equivalent
19. IBMS Specialist Portfolio in relevant field or equivalent
20. HCPC registration
21. Biomedical Sciences Degree
Desirable criteria
22. Management Qualification or equivalent
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
23. Relevant Highly developed technical and scientific skills in Histology and Dissection
24. Significant experience as a specialist BMS in a clinical UK pathology laboratory
25. Experience of troubleshooting analytical and technical problems
26. Detailed understanding of quality assurance
27. Good knowledge of health and safety regulations and risk assessments
28. Evidence of highly developed written and oral communication skills in a variety of settings.
29. Experience of working within a team
30. Full understanding of the accreditation requirements
31. Quality management experience
32. Experience of procurement of laboratory resources
33. Proven ability to manage resources effectively.

34. In depth knowledge of relevant equipment
35. Experience of providing training to other staff groups
