Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary: £35,000 – £45,000 (DOE)

The Company
Our client is a long-established UK manufacturer of industrial equipment, specialising in the design and production of special purpose machinery and precision engineered parts. With a history dating back to the 1940’s, they are a privately owned, third-generation family business with a turnover of around £12 million.
Operating from a single site, they employ over 100 staff across manufacturing, design, sales, and repair services.
Their key strength is their full cradle-to-grave capability, with design, machining, fabrication, electrical assembly, and testing all completed in-house.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will join a small, experienced design team of 3 engineers, working primarily on the development and improvement of existing product ranges. This is a hands-on, design-focused role with strong links to manufacturing, where you’ll be involved in everything from concept through to production support.
Your responsibilities will include:
Designing precision machined and fabricated components
Producing 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks (80% 3D)
Supporting R&D and continuous improvement of existing products
Creating and managing Bills of Materials (BOMs)
Liaising with shop floor, suppliers, and internal teams
Assisting with customer enquiries and technical queries
Using ERP systems to manage design data and components
What We’re Looking For
Minimum 1–2 years’ experience using SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD)
Experience designing manufactured components (machining or fabrication)
Strong understanding of how products are made and function
Detail-oriented with a passion for engineering and problem solving
Ability to work closely with manufacturing teams
Good communication skills and a team-oriented mindset
