Job Description
Vertiv is the largest electrical switchgear manufacturer in the UK & Ireland, pioneering unique in‑house integrated power solutions tailored to each individual client project. We believe that our people are our best asset and have invested in a highly qualified and experienced team of engineers to work in our manufacturing facilities across three continents. With over 30 years of experience in delivering high‑quality integrated power solutions, we are experts in providing technical services, project management services, and unrivalled customer support for every client project.
Our MV Switchgear division designs and manufactures electrical distribution equipment for business‑critical applications throughout Europe. Due to continued growth, Vertiv is seeking to recruit an ambitious and motivated System Protection Engineer to join our team.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop programmable logic files using ABB’s PCM600, Schneider Electric’s Easergy Pro, SEL’s AcSELerator Quickset, and DIGSI 5.
* Understanding of 3‑phase power systems and standard electrical equations.
* Reading of protection studies, determining pick‑up & drop‑off currents, current & voltage transformer ratios, circuit breaker trip times in both definite‑time and IEC curve trip times.
* Reading of electrical schematics to identify problems and tracing them to their root cause to solve issues.
* Liaise with project managers to ensure projects meet technical requirements, outlined in specifications and technical subs.
* Communicating with a multi‑disciplinary team, coordinating with design, production, test and EMS engineers to ensure deadlines are met for product delivery and that the product is of high quality.
* Testing of switchgear functionality: inputs and outputs are activated as expected based on the programmable logic defined in the programmed file.
* Secondary inject testing of current transformers (CTs) proving circuit breaker tripping operation times and comparing results to expected trip times as outlined by the protection study, calculated by IDMT curve equations.
* Build an understanding of switchgear function and general operation, interoperate site‑wide single‑line diagrams (SLDs) to gain understanding of power flow and cross‑communication between switchboards.
* Read in‑house wiring drawings to fault‑find troubleshooting issues that arise during commissioning and post hand‑over.
* Present projects to clients in factory witness tests (FWT), proving that products meet requirements before dispatch, answering any relevant questions, and making modifications post‑FWT based on feedback received.
* Conduct site acceptance tests (SAT) to clients, ensuring the product is fully functional once accepted and installed on‑site.
* Provide client support, travelling to site to resolve outstanding issues highlighted during commissioning before energisation of the product.
* Build competence in the IEC 61850 communication standard (both MMS client/server and GOOSE peer‑to‑peer). Using tools such as IED Scout to troubleshoot issues on the networks of intelligent electronic devices (I.E.D.s).
Essential Requirements
* Electrical and Electronic Engineering BENG/MENG, or other relevant degree, or a Distinction‑grade HND (higher‑level diploma).
* At least 1 year of industrial placement in manufacturing or design, or work experience in a relevant field.
* Ability to read electrical schematics.
* Positive attitude, desire to learn, and willingness to grow as an engineer in this field.
* Willingness to travel across the UK and Europe occasionally, as required.
Desired Requirements
* Interest in programmable logic (e.g., Arduino or Raspberry Pi).
* Good communication and presentation skills.
* Experience wiring control panels of any description.
* Good time‑management and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
* Experience with primary/secondary injection of current and voltage.
* Data centre/on‑site commissioning experience.
* Willingness to work overtime as and when required.
Travel: 5‑10% across EMEA.
