At Hays, we’re proud to partner with an inspiring Pupil Referral Unit in Grimsby that is on the lookout for a passionate and resilient KS3 teacher to join their team from September on a 12-month contract.
This isn’t your typical teaching role—and that’s exactly what makes it so rewarding. You’ll be working with a small group of students (a maximum of ten at a time), across Years 8 and 9, who have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. These young people thrive on structure, understanding, and connection—and that’s where youe in. Your role will be as much about building trust and creating a safe learning environment as it is about delivering engaging, differentiated lessons that re-ignite their love for learning.
What we’re looking for:
1. Experience teaching at KS3 level
2. A strong grasp of strategies for working with SEMH students
3. Resilience, patience, and a proactive attitude
4. Someone who sees the potential in every pupil, even when it’s buried deep
In return, you’ll receive:
5. A dedicated Hays consultant to support you throughout your placement
6. Regular check-ins and access to wellbeing support
7. Opportunities for CPD and long-term career growth
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
8. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS (with appropriate evidence of registration)
9. Proven experience teaching KS3, ideally Years 8 and 9
10. Demonstrated ability to differentiate learning between mixed-ability groups
11. Understanding of and strategies for supporting SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs
12. Enhanced DBS check (on the Update Service, or willing to obtain one)
Desirable (but not essential):
13. Prior experience teaching within a Pupil Referral Unit or Alternative Provision
14. Training in Team Teach or other de-escalation techniques
15. Familiarity with trauma-informed approaches to behaviour and classroom management
16. Knowledge of EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) and how to implement them in lesson planning
Teaching in a PRU isn’t for everyone—but for the right person, it’s a chance to make a lasting impact.
