Bart's Health NHS Trust is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic band 7 specialist nurse to join the Acute Oncology and Cancer of Unknown Primary (AOS/CUP) Service.

The post will be 0.8 WTE, based across Newham Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital and Royal London Sites in order provide best possible care to patients who present to the Trust with acute complications of their known or suspected cancer or its treatment, ensuring that their care is managed safely and effectively. The post holder will provide training and guidance for A&E, acute on take and general medical teams when they are managing oncology patients. Experience of AOS and CUP is essential.

We are seeking a nurse with excellent up to date specialist oncology knowledge and skills, the right candidate will help deliver high standards of specialist oncology patient care, training for nursing and medical colleagues and develop service innovations in line with NCAG guidance and NHS England Measures for Acute Oncology, Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression and Cancer of Unknown Primary. In addition to specialist oncology skills you will also require accomplished communication skills as you will need to: act as a key worker to oncology patients, liaise with multiple healthcare professionals and provide teaching to members of the MDT about AOS and management of oncological emergencies.

The post holder will need to be able to work autonomously as a specialist nurse within the role; however, they will be working as part of an enthusiastic multidisciplinary team across Bart's Health Trust's Hospital sites

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as an expert practitioner to provide direct specialist care to cancer patients across Barts Health NHS Trust, and to provide expert advice to non-oncology medical teams.
The aim is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided to patients attending hospital with acute complications of a known or suspected cancer or its treatment and for those who have a malignancy without an identifiable primary site and are being treated and
cared for in non-specialist areas within the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse
2. Degree Qualification or working towards a degree
3. Formal qualification in: Cancer/Palliative Care/Chemotherapy/Haematology or A&E nursing

Desirable criteria

4. Masters degree or willing to undertake Independent Non-Medical Prescriber (or willingness to undertake) Clinical examination skills (or willingness to undertake)
5. Nurse Education qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Minimum 3 years post registration experience in Oncology
7. 4 years continual post registration at RN level 1 on NMC register
8. Experience of working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner
9. Experience of independently managing a caseload

Desirable criteria

10. Previous experience working with CUP/AOS
11. Experience in Service development

Knowledge

Essential criteria

12. Proven clinical skills & sound knowledge base in cancer
13. Knowledge awareness of recent NHS legislation and recommendations in the field of cancer & palliative care
14. Emotional Intelligence
15. Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the holistic needs of the client group
16. Basic computer skills
17. Research and its relevance to clinical practice

Desirable criteria

18. Knowledge of National Cancer patient Experience Survey and ideas of how Barts Health can improve position
19. Experience of supporting patients through complex pathways
20. Understanding of clinical governance and trust governance procedure
21. Awareness of national and local trends and the wider social /political context of cancer/health care provision
