East and North Hertfordshire have fantastic opportunities available for 2 Consultants in Microbiology. This is a substantive post based at Lister Hospital located in Stevenage. The post consists of 10 programmed activities (PAs), but part‑time and job‑share applicants are welcome to apply.

This is a career enhancing opportunity to work in a large district general hospital covering the full range of acute services.

Our team consists of 4 Consultants who provide a comprehensive Microbiology service, covering a resident population of approximately 500,000 with service extensions to Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, West Hertfordshire, and Essex.

£12‑month Consultant induction programme includes a monthly education session covering topics such as “Being a new consultant – things I wish I’d known” and “Finance and contracts.”


Main duties of the job

The Consultant Microbiologists provide a proactive dynamic and consultative link between clinicians, patients and the laboratory service. They will advise on appropriate and timely investigations, direction of the laboratory service, review of repertoire and methodology, medical reporting, interpretation of results, and patient management. They are members of the Trust Infection Control Team.

The post holder will contribute to all aspects described above, including teaching medical and other health care professionals where appropriate, and will arrange a twenty‑four‑hour medical microbiology service including cover for annual and study leave.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Maintenance of high quality patient‑centred care
* Shared responsibility for day‑to‑day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
* Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
* Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity
* Active participation in continuing medical education

Person specification


Qualifications/Training

* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview, or provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
* Non‑UK trained applicants must show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT (CCT or equivalence in Medical Microbiology or Virology)
* FRCPath or equivalent
* Evidence of being up to date and fit to practice safely, and aware of own training needs


Previous Experience

* Broad range of experience in microbiology including the laboratory diagnosis of infections and their treatment
* Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
* Evidence of leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
* Experience supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
* Experience organising educational activities
* Understanding of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives
* Demonstrable experience and participation in research; published papers and original work in peer‑reviewed journals
* Interests and experience in infection control
* Demonstrable experience in a locum role


Skills

* Engagement with clinical governance and identification & learning from errors
* Situational awareness and good decision making
* Effective teaching of clinical skills
* Critical appraisal of published evidence
* Engagement with appraisal and revalidation


Knowledge

* Understanding of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives
