Job Introduction
You will play a crucial role in ensuring that our data platforms have the right level of governance and controls applied to them. You will ensure these are secure and compliant to our data standards. You will ensure that metadata is governed, and that cataloguing is automated as much as possible to enable us to achieve our goal of 'data governance as code' on our platforms. This role requires a deep technical understanding of data platforms governance.
Main Responsibilities
You will play a key role in developing effective data management and governance practises. You will work closely with Data and Platform Engineers, Platform Architects as well as Data Owners, Stewards and Custodians to ensure that the BBCs data platforms are set up for best practise and in the monitoring of usage to ensure that advise and standards are followed.
Specifically, You Will Be Responsible For These Activities
* Work with Platform Engineering, Architecture and the relevant Data Governance Leads to establish best practise platform governance, collaborating with Data Owners, Data Stewards and Data Custodians.
* Ensure that good data management practises are being documented and followed, for example guidance and documentation on how medallion layers should be used and monitoring / alerting to indicate when they are not.
* Ensure that the technical implementation of the BBC’s data catalogue follows best practise from a data and platform governance standpoint.
* Work with architects and engineers to develop processes and data pipelines to support the embedding of the data catalogue and integration with appropriate tools and technologies such as a data quality enterprise tool, SAP, DBT, Airflow and the AWS suite.
* Incorporate “shift left” methodology where it makes sense to ensure relevant technical and business metadata is captured as part of the data development process and reliably sent to and maintained in the data catalogue.
* Actively assist in the implementation and adoption of platform governance best practises such as data retention and medallion architecture processes. Work closely with other teams within Data Governance (such as Data Quality and Data Governance Frameworks) to assist with initiatives which impact data platforms
* Liaise and build relationships with the Data Protection Team and the Information Security Team to ensure that platforms are developed with Data Protection and InfoSec aims and requirements in mind
Are you the right candidate
Some Of The Things We Love
* Experience in understanding and working with data stored and processed in cloud-based data platforms e.g. Redshift, S3, AWS Glue, Airflow, Snowflake, DBT.
* Understanding of data architecture concepts and experience of working with data architects and engineers to ensure robust governance over data platforms
* Experience of implementing usage agreements, for example data contracts, and tagging data to deliver platform data governance, ideally utilising YAML files to support a data product model
* Experience with and/or knowledge of data regulations such as GDPR
* Familiarity with data governance related technologies, tools, and standards e.g. data catalogue, data quality enterprise tooling, DBT
* Familiarity with the concept and model of managing data as a product
* Excellent communication skills and a strong track record in building lasting and positive relationships with both technical and non-technical colleagues and stakeholders
Highly regarded skills
* Knowledge and experience of implementing Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC)
* Proficiency in complex dataset management and high-level programming languages such as SQL
* The management and stewardship of Data Products, ideally incorporating a data catalogue-based marketplace
* Experience in the governance of analytics solutions such as Contentsquare, Amplitude, Mixpanel and visualisation tooling solutions such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker etc.
