Role Overview
As a Deputy Catchment Engineer, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of safe, reliable and resilient engineering across our Operations Management teams. You’ll work closely with Catchment Engineers, Asset Performance teams, Field teams and Operations Managers, contributing to engineering excellence across the Hertfordshire & North London Area.
Responsibilities
Assist with identifying, monitoring and resolving issues on assets that fall below required standards.
Contribute to the management of the Area’s Strategically Important Assets and Statutory Reservoirs, providing guidance and support to Asset Performance & Field teams.
Help ensure our asset investment programme is robust, evidence‑based and future‑focused, extending beyond the current six‑year investment cycle. Work alongside project managers and area clients on engineering decisions at project level, support investment planning and ensure projects in design and construction meet Environment Agency requirements.
Develop and support others by encouraging, coaching and mentoring less experienced team members, building capability and nurturing the next generation of engineers.
Travel to sites, assets and partner locations as required – a full UK driving licence is essential.
Work as part of a dispersed Flood Risk Management Operations team, leading the inspection, maintenance and operation of assets to reduce flood risk and support environmental outcomes.
Qualifications
Must have:
* Engineering qualification and practical experience, with (or actively working towards) Incorporated / Chartered Member Status recognised by the Engineering Council (ICE, IStructE, CIWEM, etc.)
* Strong and effective communication skills with a good customer focus
* Health, Safety & Environmental experience and awareness
* Experience managing multiple priorities effectively
* Full UK driving licence
Should ideally have:
* Practical experience managing assets, ideally within the flood risk sector
* Contract Management experience within the construction sector
* Occasional deputising for Catchment Engineers at local/national meetings
Location and Working Arrangements
Based at Alchemy, Welwyn Garden City. Working from home frequency will be agreed with your line manager. Site visits will be a regular part of the role.
