Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job: Are you a cancer care nurse with a good understanding of haematology and looking for a new challenge?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic nurse to join our C7 Haematology Day Unit as a Band 6 on a 9‑month secondment / fixed‑term basis.

Our team is enthusiastic, innovative, well‑motivated and dedicated to high standards of care. The team provides patient‑centred, holistic care to patients undergoing apheresis and haematology treatments in the day‑case setting, with training for all aspects of care. The procedures undertaken include stem cell harvest, therapeutic plasma exchange and leucodepletion, venesection, donor lymphocyte infusion, blood transfusion, various chemotherapies, ambulatory service and CAR‑T therapy.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI‑generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti‑racist, anti‑discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

What You’ll Do

The successful applicant will join a highly skilled specialist team that offer treatments including SACT (systemic anti‑cancer therapies) and supportive therapies to haematology patients. C7 is a haematology/ambulatory day unit and provides specialist care for many haematology patients. Procedures such as apheresis, bone marrow biopsies and venesections take place on the unit as well as IT chemotherapy administration. You will become a highly skilled professional with multiple opportunities for career development from ANP, CNS and managerial roles. You will have the opportunity to rotate around cancer care to understand the nursing requirements for haematology patients.

Our service operates 8 am‑8 pm Mon‑Fri, 8 am‑4 pm Sat‑Sun, with an apheresis on‑call service for out‑of‑hours haematological emergencies.

What We’re Looking For

* You will provide senior support to the C7 team and assist the Band 7 in running the service day to day.
* You will be involved in service improvement projects to develop the evolving service.
* You will manage a team through change, where you’ll need to demonstrate excellent communication, clinical decision‑making, professional development and a strong commitment to developing others.
* You will have an understanding of how to improve and provide safe, quality care for patients and their relatives.
* You will provide ongoing care for haematology and oncology patients.
* IV skills including cannulation and phlebotomy.
* You will be able to administer SACT and supportive therapies to haematology patients.

You will have the opportunity to learn specialised skills such as apheresis, venesection and support bone marrow procedures and become a part of an apheresis on‑call service.
