Specialist SEND Teacher
Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Specialist SEND Teacher to join our primary and nursery school team. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality, inclusive education for pupils with a range of special educational needs and disabilities, ensuring every child thrives academically, socially, and emotionally.
This role is initially a fixed term contract for one year. As the role evolves, there is potential for the role to become permanent.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
•Plan, deliver, and adapt lessons to meet the individual needs of pupils with SEND, ensuring access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
•Use EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) and Surrey’s Ordinarily Available Provision to inform planning, provision, and assessment.
•Develop and implement personalised learning programmes, tracking progress and adjusting strategies as needed.
•Create a nurturing, structured, and ambitious learning environment where all pupils feel valued and supported.
•Coach and mentor staff in creating an inclusive classroom
Inclusion and Collaboration
•Promote a whole-school culture of inclusion, working closely with mainstream colleagues to support pupils with SEND across all settings.
•Liaise with parents, carers, and external professionals (e.g., speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, advisory teachers) to ensure joined-up support.
•Contribute to the writing and review of support plans and annual reviews.
•Collaborate with Associate SENCO and SLT to support a team of teaching assistants within the school
Professional Development and Leadership
•Model outstanding classroom practice and share expertise with colleagues.
•Contribute to staff training and whole-school CPD on SEND best practice.
•Stay up to date with current SEND legislation, research, and effective intervention strategies.
•Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching, learning, and provision, using data to drive improvement.
•Collaborate with SLT and Associate SENCo to enhance inclusive culture and practice within the school
Person Specification
Essential
•Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
•Proven experience teaching pupils with SEND in a primary setting (mainstream or specialist provision).
•Strong knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and EHCP processes.
•Empathetic and strong social skills
•Experience working with children with a range of needs, such as autism spectrum conditions, speech and language difficulties and social, emotional, and mental health needs.
•Highly effective communication skills and ability to communicate with different stakeholders
•Commitment to inclusive education and high aspirations for all pupils.
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, families, and professionals.
•Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and to mentor colleagues.
•Resilience, creativity, and a solution-focused approach.
Desirable
•Additional qualifications in SEND (e.g., National Award for SEN Coordination, PGCert in Autism, or equivalent).
•Experience in a specialist provision or resource base.
•Knowledge of specific interventions and strategies for social, emotional, mental health needs and communication and interaction needs
