Overview

The Clinical Director for Planned Care and Cancer Services Clinical Service Group is a pivotal clinical and managerial leadership role, essential to the effective functioning of the Health Board’s acute hospital services. The post holder will lead these services as a single, integrated function across four acute hospital sites, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe and value-driven care. As a highly visible, proactive, and accessible clinical leader, the Clinical Director will act as a role model and clinical resource, supporting clinicians, patients and the public. Working collaboratively with the Planned Care and Specialist Services Clinical Care Group Leadership Team, the post holder will develop and implement a localised clinical strategy aligned with the Health Board’s wider strategic vision.


Main duties of the job

* Ensure the quality, safety, and value of services delivered across the Planned Care and Cancer Services Clinical Service Group.
* Provide operational leadership and management of clinical services, maintaining high standards of patient care.
* Oversee financial management, service performance, clinical governance, and risk across the four acute centres.
* Foster a culture of integrated and patient-centred care, managing clinical interdependencies between services.
* Contribute senior clinical input to the modernisation of the specialty area at board/executive level, both locally and nationally.
* Represent Health Board Cancer Services and drive service improvement and quality in cancer care.


Person specification

* A seasoned and credible leader with a proven track record in clinical leadership.
* Extensive experience in managing clinical services in an acute healthcare setting.
* Strong ability to drive service improvement and innovation.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the capability to influence at all levels.
* Knowledge of governance, safety, and quality assurance frameworks.
* Commitment to the principles of Value Based Health Care, equity, and inclusion.


Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and surrounding counties. Our 11,000 staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a large area of Wales, in partnership with local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including volunteers.

Locations include four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest; seven community hospitals; 48 general practices; 47 dental practices; 99 community pharmacies; 44 general ophthalmic practices; and other services. The organisation also provides mental health and learning disabilities services and works with highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee.
