The main purpose of the role is to prevent situations where key stakeholders refuse to sign off a delivered final design or constructed asset because it does not meet their expectations. The PM executes the design work on time, while the DPM ensures the design meets stakeholder requirements. PMs and CMs focus on delivery, whereas the DPM sets standards for design phase deliverables and provides assurance that they are being executed correctly.
The high-level objectives of the role include:
1. Design Approval Matrix: Define who is consulted and signs off each design deliverable by RIBA stage; this matrix must be approved.
2. RIBA End-Stage Process: Define the minimum standard for RIBA end-stage reviews, including mandatory documents, forms, and invitees.
3. Track Design Progress & Maturity: Report in the programme board.
4. Stakeholder & Communications Management: Maintain this section of the PMP for leadership review.
5. Arup Supplier Relationship Management: Aggregate feedback from project teams to monitor and feedback Arup's performance during the design phase.
6. Technical Services Strategy: Agree on support requirements, identify critical asset standards, and ensure design guardians are appointed where needed.
Ensure RFIs are closed out timely (by others). Regulatory approvals during/linked to the design phase must be documented and managed. Ensure design delivery assurance by verifying processes are followed and evidence is maintained.
Further activities include:
* Motivating and encouraging internal and external design teams, attending design workshops with PMs.
* Providing regular feedback to the Programme Manager on design activities and progress.
* Ensuring drawings are produced timely, high quality, and easy to read.
* Overseeing the design process using technical expertise.
* Establishing a programme of key design activities and sign-off dates, working with the Planner.
* Creating a design sign-off process aligned with RIBA stages, capturing feedback and ensuring actions are implemented.
* Collaborating with the client to meet expectations via stakeholder mapping and workshops.
* Maintaining records of the latest design status.
* Reviewing designs with health and safety considerations, working alongside PMs, CMs, and PD.
* Facilitating value-engineering workshops to identify efficiencies.
* Ensuring designs are accessible at the right time, with controls to manage document versions.
* Maintaining thorough documentation throughout the design process.
* Staying updated with relevant legislation and standards to ensure compliance.
This is an office-based role with site visits to understand project design development.
