We are looking for a Band 4 Dental Nurse to work in our Oral Surgery specialist clinic, based in our Outpatients Department at West Middlesex University hospital, for 3 days a week (Tuesday 08:30‑17:00, Wednesday 08:30‑17:00 and Thursday 09:00‑17:00). The department operates Monday‑Friday 08:30‑17:00. Applicants must be a Registered Dental Nurse with experience caring for patients within this speciality.
Main duties of the job
* Deliver high standards of patient care within the Oral Surgery Department and support the nursing team.
* Perform clinical and chairside duties.
* Maintain high standards of patient care and ensure patient dignity.
* Assist in the correct labelling and dispatch of tissue sections and medias for specimens to appropriate laboratories.
* Participate under the direction and supervision of senior nursing and medical staff.
* Manage programme of care and maintain equipment; keep records of servicing and maintenance, with guidance of the Senior Dental Nurse.
* Participate in disinfecting, sterilising equipment as required.
* Prepare trolleys for minor oral surgical procedures.
* Assist in minor oral surgery procedures, including monitoring and aftercare of patients.
* Depute as required in organising and assisting joint clinics.
* Adhere to departmental and Trust policies on infection control, radiography and health & safety.
* Participate in the education of patients and their families/carers regarding aspects of their care.
Communication
* Act at all times in a courteous and helpful manner to patients, families, colleagues and all visitors.
* Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
* Complete appropriate documentation and report verbally to the Senior Dental Nurse.
* Maintain effective, accurate communication and dissemination of information to all staff, patients and visitors.
* Give information to patients, including helping resolve their queries with colleagues and other health care professionals.
* Give written advice to patients regarding health promotion.
* Communicate with multidisciplinary team to ensure prompt, effective care and treatment.
* Maintain accurate written records of all procedures in the designated clinical area.
Personal and people development
* Attend and keep a record of Trust statutory and mandatory training.
* Attend annual PDRs/appraisals and identify own training and development needs with the Senior Dental Nurse.
* Keep up to date with clinical developments.
* Participate in the welcome and orientation of visitors to the outpatient department (students, temporary staff and visiting medical staff).
* Participate in induction of new and bank staff to the Outpatients Department and sign the relevant competency form.
* Participate in the training and supervision of Student Dental Nurses and temporary nurses, if required.
Health, safety and security
* Ensure the safety of patients at all times.
Service improvement
* Participate in the development and improvement of the Oral Surgery Department within the Outpatients Department.
Quality
* Bring to the attention of the Senior Dental Nurse any aspects of the work in the clinics that impact on the quality of service, including patient information and data.
* Respond to incidents and complaints as they arise and report to the Senior Dental Nurse.
* Contribute to the Outpatients clinical and non‑clinical risk management by documenting incidents and near misses via the trust incident reporting system.
* Maintain a tidy, clean and safe environment, following hospital guidelines and policies with regard to infection control and health & safety, and ensuring equipment is cleaned and stored correctly.

Education and qualifications
* Registered Dental Nurse Certificate.
Experience
* Previous experience working in an NHS or private dental health care environment.
* Experience assisting with minor oral surgical procedures.
