We are currently recruiting for a carpenter to join a friendly and weing team within a higher education organisation. You’ll be joining a dedicated and professional Estates and Facilities Services team responsible for maintaining a vibrant, safe, and weing university campus. The estate includes a diverse mix of academic buildings, student amodation, and heritage properties, offering you a varied and rewarding working environment where your skills will make a real difference to students, staff, and visitors every day.
Your new role
As Carpenter and Joiner, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the functionality, safety, and overall quality of the university’s built environment. You will carry out a wide range of carpentry and joinery tasks, with a particular focus on:
1. Fire door installation, maintenance, andpliance
2. Fire stopping works to maintain buildingpartmentation
3. Routine and reactive maintenance of locks, door furniture, and access systems
4. General repairs, installations, and timber-based maintenance across the campus
5. Supporting minor refurbishment and renovation projects
6. Interpreting technical drawings andpleting works to a high standard
7. Maintaining accurate work records and ensuring all tasks meet health and safety requirements
You’ll work closely with other trades and departments to coordinate tasks and minimise disruption across the estate. Participation in an out‑of‑hours rota and occasional weekend work.
What you'll need to succeed
We’re looking for a qualified and experienced tradesperson who takes pride in delivering high‑quality work and providing excellent service.Essential requirements include:
8. Apprenticeship in joinery or Level 2/3 Diploma/NVQ
9. Fire Door Maintenance qualification
10. Fire Safety and Awareness training
11. At least 5 years’ experience in a carpentry role within the built environment
12. Strong experience with fire door and fire stopping maintenance
13. Ability to safely use workshop equipment (, bandsaws, table saws)
14. Excellent attention to detail, safety awareness, and a hardworking, diligent approach
15. Strongmunication skills and ability to prioritise workload
16. Flexibility and ability to work effectively as part of a team
17. A full UK driving licence
Desirable attributes include:
18. Fire door installation and fire stopping qualifications
19. Asbestos awareness
20. Experience maintaining workshop equipment
21. Knowledge of passive fire protection
22. Working at Height training
