Geoenvironmental Engineer
Join the @one Alliance – a collaborative partnership of eight industry-leading companies (Anglian Water, Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska, and SWECO) delivering over half of Anglian Water’s capital investment programme. As we prepare for the challenges and opportunities of AMP8, we’re looking for talented individuals to help us shape the future of water design and infrastructure.
At Anglian Water, we’re Always Exploring – ensuring we remain competitive, attractive, and rewarding for both existing and prospective employees. By Doing The Right Thing, we’re committed to recognising and rewarding our people fairly and transparently, while Building Trust through a culture that prioritises health, safety, and wellbeing.
Your Purpose
As a Geoenvironmental Engineer, you’ll play a key role in assessing, managing, and influencing geoenvironmental risks across our diverse portfolio of water and water recycling projects. You’ll support the Principal Geotechnical Engineer and act as a trusted specialist within the geotechnical discipline – ensuring contaminated land risks are understood, mitigated, and effectively integrated into the design journey.
You’ll contribute to the development of value-driven, sustainable engineering solutions that reduce carbon, protect natural capital, and support the delivery of safe, affordable, and environmentally responsible infrastructure for the East of England.
What You’ll Be Doing
• Consider geoenvironmental constraints at Desk Study stage, informing early project decisions.
• Enable decisions that eliminate or reduce risks from contaminated ground during construction and operation.
• Undertake site visits to assess viability, constraints, and requirements for ground investigation and construction activities.
• Identify and manage specialist geoenvironmental inputs where required.
• Specify ground investigations, including contaminated land testing, gas monitoring, and groundwater monitoring.
• Provide guidance on pipe material selection for potable water based on geoenvironmental conditions.
• Produce interpretive Ground Investigation Reports, including chemical exceedance assessments and implications for construction.
• Produce geoenvironmental risk assessments and develop conceptual site models.
• Ensure alignment between geoenvironmental and geotechnical requirements across all project stages.
• Monitor the performance of ground investigation contractors and provide technical supervision of site works.
• Work collaboratively with project teams and Senior Civil Engineers to deliver outcomes efficiently and affordably.
• Support sustainability by embedding low-carbon, natural-capital-enhancing solutions within geoenvironmental design.
• Contribute to challenging conventional approaches and delivering value-driven outcomes.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders to obtain acceptance and integrate geoenvironmental considerations.
• Ensure compliance with relevant technical standards, specifications, and CDM requirements.
• Support innovation by contributing to the introduction of new techniques, technologies, and digital approaches.
About You
You will ideally have:
• A degree in environmental science, geology, earth sciences, or a related subject, with proven experience in land contamination, land quality or environmental science.
• Working towards chartership with a relevant institution (CGeol / CSci).
• Preferable experience of water-sector assets and capital projects.
• Ideally, but not essential, experience in a Design & Build environment.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, able to translate complex information clearly.
• Proven ability to manage your own workload and support multidisciplinary teams.
• A commitment to sustainability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Integrity, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative, inclusive approach to working.
• A growth mindset, with an interest in developing both professionally and technically.
Depending on your skills, experience, and interests, you could be aligned to one of our four business units:
Water
The Water Business Unit provides strategic design and technical support across the clean water network – from infrastructure planning to treatment resilience – ensuring secure and efficient water supplies for future generations.
Water Infrastructure Portfolio – Supporting potable water pipeline projects influenced by growth, resilience, and mains renewal, assessing geoenvironmental constraints throughout.
National Infrastructure Portfolio – Assessing and supporting protection and diversion of Anglian Water assets impacted by major regional infrastructure projects (rail, highways, energy), including contaminated land considerations.
Water Non-Infrastructure Portfolio – Contributing geoenvironmental expertise to treatment works, groundwater abstraction, pumping stations and water quality programmes (e.g., nitrate and PFAS removal).
Water Recycling (East and West)
Our Water Recycling teams design and optimise wastewater infrastructure and treatment solutions. You will support projects by evaluating contaminated land risks, specifying appropriate investigations, and enabling sustainable, low-carbon solutions that improve environmental performance.
Place Based Thinking
Delivering some of the largest and most complex projects within the @one Alliance, this team focuses on integrated, catchment-based solutions. As a Geoenvironmental Engineer, you’ll provide early advice on land quality constraints, support strategic risk mitigation, and enable multi-site environmental resilience.
Why Join Us?
This is a fantastic opportunity to work with one of the UK’s most progressive design and delivery alliances. You’ll play a key role in strengthening our geoenvironmental capability and shaping the next generation of water and water recycling assets that respond to the region’s most pressing environmental challenges.
We offer a culture that values creativity, technical excellence, sustainability, and professional growth. You’ll have opportunities to expand your expertise, innovate, and influence how the @one Alliance approaches future delivery.
We reward our people fairly and transparently, with a strong emphasis on inclusion, wellbeing, and long-term development.
