Role Overview

As a bailiff, you will play a vital role in the UK’s Justice System, working on the front line and dealing with people at some of the most challenging points of their lives.

About HMCTS

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice, supporting the legal system across England and Wales to ensure justice for everyone. Our justice system defends fundamental rights and freedoms, protects vulnerable people, and operates efficiently and accessibly.

What Our Bailiffs Say

Our bailiffs describe their roles as requiring good listening skills, communication, empathy, and the ability to handle emotionally charged situations confidently. Many find the role rewarding and a defining part of their careers.

Your Role

This dynamic role involves visiting people in their homes and businesses, explaining the purpose of visits, and offering options to resolve matters. You must be empathetic, non-judgmental, adaptable, and capable of managing workload and short-notice plan changes.

You can use your own car or, after probation, a lease car (full UK driving license required). Full PPE, safety training, and IT training on court case management systems are provided.

Ideal Candidate

If you have excellent customer service skills, enjoy working independently or in small teams, and prefer varied days, this role may suit you. It offers a chance to develop within the Civil Service and make a difference in HMCTS.

Additional Information

The role attracts a £1,000 annual allowance, is full-time (37 hours/week), with options for flexible and part-time working patterns. Hybrid working arrangements are available where suitable.

Successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest office to their home postcode within the National Office Network, spending at least 60% of their time in the office.

Benefits and Policies

Benefits include annual leave increasing from 25 to 30 days after five years, pension schemes, training opportunities, employee networks, flexible working policies, and various family-friendly policies.

We are committed to diversity, merit-based recruitment, and supporting candidates with disabilities, veterans, and those at risk of redundancy.

Eligibility and Application

This position is open to UK nationals, Irish, Commonwealth, and certain EU nationals, and others with the right to work in the UK. A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months.

Selection Process

Assessment methods include review of CV/work history, license verification, and interview assessments scheduled for 18th June 2025 at Taunton Magistrates.

Behaviours and Strengths

Key behaviours include Making Effective Decisions, Delivering at Pace, and Communicating and Influencing. Strengths will be assessed without prior disclosure.

Use of AI

Applicants must ensure all submitted evidence is truthful and accurate. Plagiarism, including AI-generated content presented as your own, is prohibited.
