Overview
The Principal Teacher of English at Anderson High School, Lerwick, Shetland Islands, is a senior teaching post within a six-year secondary school serving Shetland and its associated primary schools. The role focuses on leading English teaching and learning, inclusion, and the development of a high-quality learning environment in a well-resourced school within a caring, supportive community.
Responsibilities
* Provide strategic leadership for the English department and contribute to school improvement alongside the Head Teacher.
* Lead teaching and learning in English across the school, with emphasis on inclusion and raising pupil achievement.
* Collaborate with colleagues, support staff, and senior leaders to ensure a high standard of pupil progress and well-being.
* Contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and the provision for S1–S9 learners.
* Engage with parents and the wider community to support pupil learning and school initiatives.
Qualifications and experience
* Relevant qualifications and experience in English education; GTCS registration is required prior to starting in post.
* Appointment may require PVG Scheme clearance or update prior to formal offer (as applicable).

Condition of service and terms
* Post grade: Principal Teacher - Job Size 5
* Salary includes Distant Islands Allowance (£2,859 per annum, pro rata)
* Permanent full-time; 35.0 hours per week
* FTE of post: 1.0; Class Information: S1–S9; Sector/Subject: English
* Relocation package available
* Interview expenses payable from within the UK
* Flexible working arrangements may be discussed
* GTCS registration required prior to starting; PVG clearance as applicable
