We’re looking for a skilled Mechanical Technician to join our engineering team in Newport. This is a hands-on role supporting the smooth operation of the port’s critical infrastructure.
Responsibilities
* Mechanical maintenance, fault finding, and breakdown response across the Newport site
* Working on heavy plant equipment, cranes, lock gate infrastructure, and bridges
* Ensuring all work is carried out safely and efficiently, with accurate reporting
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering
* Proven experience in heavy plant maintenance and repair
* Strong knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics systems
* Experience in heavy industry environments such as steelworks, quarries, or manufacturing
* Hands-on approach with excellent fault-finding and diagnostic skills
* Strong commitment to health and safety practices
* Ability to work independently and as part of a small, close-knit team
* Comfortable working at height and in confined spaces (e.g., cranes, lock bridges)
Hours
The shift pattern consists of two weekday shifts: 06:00–14:00 and 14:00–22:00, Monday to Friday. Additionally, there is a one-in-six weekend rota covering 06:00–18:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. Weekend hours are compensated as overtime.
