Hours: Full time - 37 hours per week (Max 2 days working from home per week)
About the Role
The Young Persons Advisor will support Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) and Care Leavers as they transition into adulthood. The role focuses on housing, education, employment, asylum processes, and promoting independence. You will hold case responsibility for young adults, ensuring their welfare and supporting them in line with statutory responsibilities, Suffolk’s Signs of Safety framework, and best practice in corporate parenting.
Key Responsibilities
Support vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees until early adulthood.
Undertake welfare visits to assess housing conditions and manage risks.
Chair Pathway Review Meetings using the Triple Planning process.
Support Care Leavers with Home Office appointments, asylum/appeals, education, employment, finances, benefits, and budgeting.
Manage Setting Up Home Allowance and provide independent living guidance.
Advocate for Care Leavers across agencies and services.
Assist with Human Rights Assessments where required.
Build relationships with asylum/refugee charities and partner organisations.
Maintain accurate case records and contribute to quality assurance processes.
Safeguard children and young people, escalating concerns where appropriate.
Work flexibly across various settings, including homes and community locations.Experience & Knowledge
Experience of working directly with children, young people, and families.
Understanding of safeguarding, child protection, and risk management.
Knowledge of early intervention, preventative work, and solution-focused practice.
Awareness of social, emotional, and cultural factors affecting young people.
Experience supporting vulnerable groups, including asylum seekers and refugees.
Ability to collaborate with multi-agency partners and communities.
(Desirable) Knowledge of relevant legislation, assessment frameworks, and Signs of Safety tools.Skills & Competencies
Strong communication and engagement skills with young people and families.
Ability to de-escalate challenging situations and build trust.
Effective record-keeping and report-writing skills, using plain language.
Problem-solving, planning, and intervention development skills.
Ability to chair meetings and advocate for young people.
Sensitivity to diversity, disability, sexuality, gender, and cultural issues.
Strong organisational and workload management skills.Qualifications
Practitioner-level qualification at Level 3 or equivalent relevant experience.
Evidence of continuing professional development.Other Requirements
Commitment to Suffolk County Council’s WE ASPIRE values.
Willingness to work flexibly across locations, including rural areas.
Full DBS check required.
Ability to travel independently across Suffolk and occasionally outside the county.
Full and current driving licence with access to transport (or ability to meet mobility requirements).
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
