About The Role
The Research and Development Manager is a senior role within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, responsible for driving large-scale, high-profile healthcare engineering grants that deliver real-world patient benefits and measurable impact. Working closely with the Head of School, Heads of Research Departments, academic and research staff, and external stakeholders, this role will play a pivotal part in securing funding, fostering strategic collaborations, and facilitating the translation of healthcare engineering innovations into clinical applications.
The Research and Development Manager will be instrumental in realizing the School’s vision by providing strategic and operational support. They will support the development and submission of competitive grant applications, fellowships, and funding proposals to governmental agencies, charities, and industry sponsors. The role requires a strong scientific background, exceptional writing skills, and the ability to translate complex research concepts into clear, compelling narratives tailored to funder priorities.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week) role, and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
Responsibilities
* Lead development and submission of large-scale grant applications, fellowships, and funding proposals to governmental agencies, charities, and industry sponsors.
* Strategically align research opportunities with institutional priorities and long-term impact goals.
* Provide project management for large-scale research programs, including financial oversight, impact reporting, and governance and ethics compliance.
* Prepare high-quality funding bids and articulate compelling narratives to diverse funders.
* Support research translation, commercialization, and regulatory considerations, including intellectual property issues and industry engagement.
* Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to secure strategic grants and partnerships.
* Support PREP and REF submissions as required and monitor research impact metrics.
* Maintain knowledge of funding landscape, including UKRI, NIHR, EU, industry, and philanthropic sources.
* Contribute to the development of research strategy and alignment with institutional priorities.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field, such as biomedical engineering, healthcare research, or translational science.
* Proven experience securing research funding from UKRI, NIHR, EU, industry, and philanthropic sources, with a track record of multi-disciplinary funding applications.
* Experience in research strategy development and aligning funding opportunities with institutional priorities and long-term impact goals.
* Strong project management experience, including large-scale programs, financial oversight, impact reporting, and governance/ethics compliance.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills for shaping proposals and engaging diverse stakeholders.
* Experience of line management and developing individuals.
* Analytical and problem-solving skills to track research impact and funding trends and support REF submissions.
* Understanding of research translation, commercialization, regulatory pathways, and IP considerations, with industry engagement experience.
* Experience securing large strategic grants and prior REF preparation experience.
* Experience in research translation and commercialization and familiarity with HE/NHS research environments.
* Knowledge of Full Economic Costing (FEC), ACoRD principles, and research finance management systems (e.g., Worktribe/NHS equivalents).
* Familiarity with innovation and enterprise functions (spin-outs, licensing, industry partnerships).
* Project management qualification or training (e.g., PRINCE2, Agile, or equivalent).
* Experience leading or contributing to REF submissions in biomedical engineering or related disciplines.
Desirable Criteria
* Experience within HE or NHS research environments, supporting research growth and impact assessment.
* Knowledge of FEC, AcoRD principles, and related finance management systems.
* Familiarity with industry partnerships and licensing agreements.
* Additional project management qualifications or training.
* Experience contributing to REF submissions in biomedical engineering or related disciplines.
