Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a Trainee CNS/ FDS Nurse to join our Gynaecological Oncology team.

This exciting opportunity is open to all registered nurses working within a relevant specialty.

The post involves completing a structured programme of objectives and supervised practice, designed to develop you into a highly competent and autonomous Band 7 CNS, supporting patients across the diagnostic and treatment pathway, including the Faster Diagnostic Service (FDS).

For those who may not yet fully meet the criteria, we are also open to offering this role as a developmental post at Band 6.

In this case, you will undertake a structured training, academic, and professional development pathway, designed to enable progression to Band 7 within six months upon achieving the necessary competencies.

You will collaborate on a tailored training plan and fully engage in the development process to support their growth into the Band 7 role.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will provide a high-quality, patient-centred specialist nursing service for patients with suspected and confirmed gynaecological cancers. The post holder will act as the clinical expert and professional resource for the multidisciplinary team (MDT), patients, and carers within the Gynaecology Oncology service.

The post holder will ensure that patients and their carers receive the highest standard of care and support from the point of referral through diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical intervention, oncological therapies, and ongoing follow-up. Acting as the key worker, the CNS will coordinate care and provide continuity across the patient pathway.

A key focus of the role is supporting the Faster Diagnostic Service (FDS), ensuring patients with suspected gynaecological malignancy receive timely assessment, investigation, and diagnosis or exclusion of cancer within 28 days of referral, in line with national standards. The post holder will work closely with the MDT to support early triage of referrals, rapid review of diagnostic results, and appropriate onward referral, discharge, or surveillance as required.

The post holder will provide a direct telephone contact service for patients and their families, offering ongoing advice, information, and emotional support.

In collaboration with other Gynaecological Oncology CNSs, and under the managerial supervision of the Lead Gynaecological Oncology CNS, the post holder will contribute to the development and expansion of the specialist service in line with the BHR clinical governance framework, NICE guidance, and London Cancer Network guidelines.

The CNS will act as a representative of the Gynaecology Oncology Network at local, regional, or national meetings as required and will provide leadership in clinical practice for professional teams and peers, supporting learning and development across the primary and secondary care interface.
