Overview

The Environment Agency seeks a confident and enthusiastic Geomatics Analyst to join the National Monitoring Survey team. This role focuses on the delivery of remote sensing products, with emphasis on airborne optical data to support intertidal vegetation mapping, particularly saltmarsh extent and zonation. The work supports statutory reporting obligations under the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations and contributes to assessing and monitoring intertidal habitats.

You will join a small, collaborative team to produce high-quality spatial data that supports environmental monitoring and reporting. The role involves processing and analysing aerial photography and other airborne optical datasets, with additional use of satellite and drone data where appropriate. Ground truth data collection may be required to support and validate remote sensing outputs.

The National Monitoring Survey team works with National & Area teams to co-deliver monitoring requirements for the Environment Agency and the wider environmental community. The team provides specialist services for Lidar, Aerial Photography and Satellite data, delivering high-quality data with an integrated approach to geo-information.

Responsibilities

* Contribute to saltmarsh extent and zonation mapping from high-resolution aerial imagery.
* Identify vegetation types in airborne imagery using a broad classification system suitable for intertidal habitats.
* Edit existing spatial features and digitise new extents based on remote sensing interpretation.
* Support environmental monitoring and incident response through other remote sensing analyses.
* Integrate ground truth data to support validation of remote sensing outputs where required.

Requirements / Qualifications

* A relevant degree in Geography, Remote Sensing, GIS, Environmental Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience. Strong GIS skills are essential, ideally using ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcMap) and experience with large spatial datasets for analysis and reporting.
* Practical experience with remote sensing data, particularly airborne optical imagery, and an understanding of image classification techniques for habitat mapping. Experience with satellite and drone data is beneficial.
* Experience editing spatial features and digitising new extents; familiarity with feature class management and spatial editing workflows is essential. Ability to identify vegetation types in imagery.
* Strong organisational skills, professionalism, and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines, with effective communication and teamwork.

Context and Contacts

The post is full-time with flexible working patterns considered. You may be based anywhere within working proximity to an Environment Agency office. Travel to the Geomatics team hub base in Bath may be required, and occasional office attendance will be needed to support the team charter.

For questions relating to this role, contact David White at David.white@environment-agency.gov.uk or Tel 07552 271881. Interviews will be via MS Teams. Interview dates are likely to be week commencing 13 October. Length of contract: Up to November 2026.
