Job summary

Mr. Karthik Srinivasan Memorial Sarcoma & Microsurgery Reconstruction Fellowship.

The specialty of Sarcoma Reconstruction at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Royal Orthopaedic Hospital provides nationally recognised service for all different types of sarcomas involving all age groups, in all parts of the body.

We are looking for a highly motivated, innovative and skilled individuals who are passionate about gaining more experience and expertise in sarcoma and microsurgery reconstruction by taking up a fellowship. This fellowship is suitable for those near or post CCT or those working towards CESR. The successful candidates will play an important role in supporting sarcoma service both at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH), Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB) sites across its inpatient and outpatient service.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to:

Take lead and assist with delivering high quality care for sarcoma reconstruction patients

*participate in sarcoma outpatient clinics at Royal Orthopaedic hospital

*Ad Hoc combined clinics with sarcoma surgeons at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

*Contribute & lead in MDTs, audit and complex case review meetings

*take the opportunity to gain more experience in sarcoma management.

*provide support to sarcoma specialist nurse team

*participate in audits and research aimed at sarcoma reconstruction.

*Help develop and improve efficiency in sarcoma patient management through streamlining and developing enhanced recovery pathways

*support learning and development of resident medical staff and specialist nurse teams.

Sarcoma Service

The Sarcoma service at UHB provides comprehensive care to the complex group of patients at secondary and tertiary care level with a wide range of sarcomas from the West Midlands and beyond. The bony sarcoma as managed at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Trunk, Head and neck sarcomas are managed at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The department combines provision of a clinical service with an active, clinical research programme. The services we provide are nationally and internationally recognised include those for patients with bone, soft tissue sarcomas, Abdominal and retroperitoneal sarcoma (MARSU), Head and neck sarcomas

The service is primarily based in Royal Orthopaedic Hospital with a weekly theatre session and a busy outpatient clinic, seeing dedicated plastic surgery patients and joint with orthopaedic colleagues in combined planning and decision making. There are ad hoc theatre sessions both in ROH and QEHB providing reconstructive cover for the limb and MARSU units. The centre also has a weekly MDT at ROH provide multiple opportunities for education and planning treatment for these patients. The department works in close collaboration with orthopaedic oncologists, General surgery sarcoma surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, Clinical nurse specialists and ad hoc operating with colorectal surgeons, urologists and any other speciality depending on their specialisation. It gives a broad exposure for reconstruction involving all parts of the body using all different methods of reconstruction including Free flaps.

Inpatient Services

Majority of in patients are based in ROH and the sarcoma fellow is primarily responsible in providing safe pre and post operative care and also actively involved in the planning of resection and reconstruction.
