Simulation and Clinical Skills Technician

We have an exciting opportunity to join our medical education simulation team as we build and develop a new simulation centre, including an immersive room. We are looking for an enthusiastic motivatedperson who enjoys working as part of a team providing technical support forsimulation and clinical skills teaching. The role will supportthe technical and administrative side to ensure the smooth running of the undergraduate and postgraduate medicaleducation. The successfulcandidate will have a technical background and be confident with the useaudio-visual technology with excellent organisational skills. Previous healthcare experience an advantage but not necessary.


Main duties of the job

This role comes at an excitingtime within the Undergraduate Academy, with plans for future expansion. We have a range of skillsand simulation manikins, from neonates to elderly care, to help provide clinicalskills teaching and high fidelity simulations to our undergraduate medicalstudents and postgraduate teams.

The role is varied and exciting, it involves inistusimulations as well as the delivery of the medical academy programmes.Maintenance of simulation and clinical skills equipment is key in helping andsupporting the department deliver high standards of teaching. The job involves supporting the current team with technical support as well as providing administrative duties to ensure the smooth running of the service.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

The main purpose of the Simulationand Audio-visual Technician is to provide operational co-ordination of alltechnical aspects of clinical and non-clinical education within thesimulation, clinical, classroom and virtual delivery learning environmentsacross the organisation.

The post holder supports theplanning, testing and delivery of simulation pedagogies, acting as thesubject matter expert in high-fidelity and Technology Enhanced Learningequipment, facilities and approaches.

The post holder will work as part ofthe wider Education and Training Team in providing advanced audio-visual,multimedia, teleconferencing and facilities support to a range of trainingand conference events, as a customer facing member of the team.

The Simulation and Audio-visualTechnician is responsible for the operational management, maintenance, andrisk assessment of simulation and technological equipment within the trainingfacilities.

The post holder oversees thetraining department intranet page and maintains a presence on social media inthe promotion of Worcestershire acute NHS Trust as a centre of simulationtraining department.

Thedepartment operates across all trust sites and the post holder will be

expectedto travel to different locations, where and when their role requires them todo so.

Key Duties

General Duties

Provides technical and operationalsupport before, during and after simulation training activities.

Support simulation educationfacilitators in the operational management of teaching sessions andassociated events, including participating in scenarios as required.

Synthesise data for use insimulation pre-briefing and debriefing, including audio-visual recordings,and other measurable outcomes.

Be the on-site subject matter expertin high-fidelity and Technology Enhanced Learning equipment and facilities,including mannequins, moulage, mixed reality equipment, audio-visual systemsand simulation environments.

Work alongside educationalfacilitators to design, plan, test and evaluate simulation learningactivities and scenarios across the organisation.

Provides technical support in theoperation and troubleshooting of teleconferencing facilities across thetraining facilities to facilitate connectivity with external organisationsand across the multiple sites.

Operational management of simulationintranet page, and maintain a social media presence in the promotion ofevents and WAHT as a centre of simulation excellence.

Ensure each piece of equipmentdisplays user-friendly guidelines that meet Trust and supplierrecommendations.

Ensure each piece of equipmentdisplays user-friendly guidelines that meet Trust and supplierrecommendations.

Ensure all equipment is appropriatelycleaned and stored after use, and maintain the highest standards ofmaintenance within the centres.

Replenish all training devices aftereach session across the trust sites as delegated and replace consumables asrequired.

Monitor the life span of theequipment and resources and make recommendations to the facilities and safetymanager and business continuity manager for new purchases and upgrades toexisting equipment

Communication and Working Relationship Skills

Provide and receive and exchange routine information to informwork colleagues, service users and suppliers.

Work alongside educators across the organisation Integrated CareSystem to support the safe and effective delivery of inclusive simulation andclinical teaching activities and events.

Provides front of house customer service during simulationevents, demonstrating trust values, professional accountability andresponsibility in all interactions.

Contribute to the pre-briefing and debriefing process throughthe provision of feedback, feed forward, audio-visual recordings, andsimulation scenario related data.

Acts as a point of contact in relation to simulation facilitiesbookings across the department, working in compliance with the room bookingprotocol.

Maintain effective relationships with external companies andcontractors in line with service contract, with a high standard ofconfidentiality regarding all information held in respect to service usersand trust business.

Provides technical support to internal and external facilitatorsat conferences and events delivered within the training facilities.

Communicates technical issues to senior team members, andexplains technical issues to service users where there may be barriers tounderstanding.

Engages with local and regional networks, committees and workinggroups related to simulation and Technology Enhanced Learning under guidanceof Clinical Education Lead.

Act as the voice of a patient in simulation teaching activitieswhere required.

Actively participate in team meetings and complete allocatedactions.

Participates in the induction of new team members, apprenticesand students.

Working relationship with the internal Informatics and ITSupport Team.

Collaborative relationship with simulation faculty in partnereducation.

Analyticaland judgemental skills

Uses analytical skills to troubleshoot technicaldifficulties in the learning environments, providing expert advice onsolution options, and problem solving minor faults and technical issues withhardware and software with the use of precision tools.

Diagnose and escalating major faults to the ClinicalEducation Lead and/or centre manager.

Analyses and provides data output from simulationteaching on request to inform audits, service improvement, research andlearning outcomes.

Planning and Organisational Skills

Organisation of the simulation learning environmentroom booking system.

Plan head to ensure resources and equipment requiredare booked from the equipment library and in-situ for teaching activities.

Co-ordination of the simulation and audio-visualtechnologies ensuring they are prepared, powered and ready for use as required.

Plans and organises straight forward maintenance taskswithin scope of competence.

Liaise with external companies to plan and scheduleequipment servicing schedules and extraordinary call outs for repairs withminimal disruption to service delivery.

Prioritises emergent technical faults.

Responsibility for Policy /Service Development

Audits equipment and facilities usage giving feedbackon innovative Technology Enhanced Learning developments which may lead toservice improvement or comment on policy development.

Identifying areas for service improvement anddevelopment, and working with education facilitators and managers to implementnew pedagogies, equipment, resources and facility modernisations.

Responsibility for Finance,Equipment and Other Resources

Responsible for the daily co-ordination of clinicaland simulation training environments, including the planning, setting up,calibration, safe use, and break down of simulation sessions, sets, andclinical teaching activities.

Maintains the simulation facilities, equipment,resources and assets, including co-ordination of the equipment library,ensuring risk assessments and user guides are up to date and that software andhardware is fit for purpose, calibrated, and up to date.

Responsible for monitoring and replenishing sufficientstock, consumables and sundries in clinical and simulation teachingenvironments, ensuring safe cleaning and disposal of products of simulation,according to trust waste management policies.

Responsible for the safe and secure storage ofexpensive simulation equipment and resources.

Adheres to technical documentation and standardoperating procedures for best practice use of equipment, resources andfacilities.

Reports faults of equipment, furniture, fixtures andfittings. Troubleshoot and diagnose minor faults.

Raises requisitions on electronic procurement systemand maintains financial records as relevant to their scope.

Works with the Lead Nurse and Simulation Lead toco-ordinate financial implications of equipment and facilities maintenance.

Mental, Physical, and EmotionalEffort

Frequent concentration for prolonged periods of timeduring the running of simulation training activities, and for fault finding,equipment inspections and repairs.

Interruptions to work to deal with emergent issues.

Frequent use of audio-visual equipment includingelectronic devices and monitors.

Person Specification


Experience

* Experience of working with AV multimedia/XR/VR/AR.
* Experience of working with IT applications, in particular, databases & spreadsheets.
* Experience of working in medical education/simulation.
* Experience of working in healthcare setting/clinical environment.
* Experience of applying moulage techniques to support high fidelity simulation.


Qualifications

* Trained in healthcare/administration to NVQ level 3 (equivalent or higher)/ Information Technology BTEC Level 3 or above or equivalent/ GCSE including Maths and English at Grade C or above or equivalent level of qualification and grade.
* Science Council/ASPiH registered Science Technician or commitment to achieve registration.


Personal Qualities

* Use own initiative to identify work to be completed, in a timely and efficient manner.
* Able to work autonomously as well as part of a team.
* Able to respond flexibly and positively to changing requirements.
* Able to be flexible and adjust working times to accommodate later finishes.


Skills/Knowledge

* Able to articulate and effectively communicate specialist and technical information so that participants in simulation are able to use equipment safely and effectively.
