WYFRS invites applications for the Station Manager Promotion Process. This opportunity is open to competent whole-time Watch Managers within WYFRS seeking promotion. As part of the process, a development programme will be utilised to ensure you have the opportunity to develop the right skills, knowledge, behaviours and understanding to perform the role. Following an induction, successful candidates will embark on a development programme that will prepare them for the step up into the unique and key organisational role of WYFRS Station Manager.
Eligibility and Qualifications
* Be substantive and competent in your current role.
* Hold and maintain all qualifications required for your current role.
* Have completed and maintained all role related courses within the required refresher periods.
* Have no current or outstanding development action plans, performance improvement action plans or capability issues related to competency.
* Be free of current formal disciplinary awards throughout the entire process.
* Have completed an Annual Review in the last 12 months, with no concerns captured, and that you wish to be considered for promotion/development.
* Your line manager has completed a Talent Assessment within the Annual Review system showing potential for promotion.
* Diploma in Fire Engineering and Science or a Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety.
* Possess an IFE Level 4 Certificate in Fire Service Operations.
Promotion Process Overview
1. Application – Submit an online application form using the e-recruitment system. Applicants must detail how they meet all essential criteria, in no more than 600 words per criterion.
2. Shortlisting – Following the closing date, shortlisting panel evaluates applications. Successful candidates may be invited to express interest in a period of Temporary Promotion.
3. Assessment – Internal pathway candidates complete Phase 1 of the development programme within 3-6 months. Applicants are assessed through the Career Progression Gateway (CPG) consisting of two online exercises: a timed case‑study exercise and a role‑play exercise. Candidates must also meet the required standard of Operational Command Assurance.
4. Development – Successful shortlisted candidates receive training appointments from the WYFRS Command Training Team. Attendance is voluntary, but recommended. Candidates prepare a 15‑minute presentation and will face a 60‑minute interview.
5. Promotion – Successful applicants are held on a succession list in merit order. When a suitable vacancy arises, a promotion offer is made. On acceptance, the candidate will be paid at the development rate of pay and required to complete the development programme. Upon satisfactory completion, competent pay will be awarded and the role made substantive.
