Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner or qualified (ACP) within Surgical SDEC at JCUH

Are you a clinical expert who puts the clinical and holistic needs of our patients first to ensure safe, high quality and effective care?. We are looking for experienced and highly skilled clinicians to develop and work within the advancing services of SDEC.

This role will involve directly delivering high quality care within the same day emergency setting at an advanced level, utilising clinical skills and assessment. Working effectively across all four pillars of advanced clinical practice as set out by Health Education England (2017).

The post holder will also provide strong clinical leadership and support to nursing and AHP teams, contributing to service development and driving improvements in patient experience.

Main duties of the job

Providing in-patient, same day emergency care with consistent high quality clinical care, supporting trust management teams with on-going clinical care provision and assist with effective patient flow through the trust.

1. Registered healthcare practitioner
2. Independent non-medical prescribing (where legally permitted)
3. Portfolio demonstrating continued professional development and ongoing assessments
4. ILS provider.

Working for your organisation

Same day emergency care is a transformational change in care delivery and is vital in changing the way patient's access our services. Patients attending the unit are referred by Emergency Departments, GP & UTC practices, and other clinical specialities with suspected Surgical, Urological or Gastroenterology conditions. The unit also hosts a range of review clinics and treatments for patients. The underlying principle behind this unit is managing patients outside of the hospital bed base as much as possible. You will be expected to work as part of a team in delivering care to patients who are referred into the department.

Qualifications 8a

Essential criteria

5. Registered healthcare practitioner
6. MSc in advanced Clinical Practice/Royal college credentialed/ NHSE accredited AP
7. Completed portfolio of professional development which evidences an advanced level of clinical practice in line with NHSE (2025) framework for AP
8. Independent non-medical prescribing (where legally permitted)
9. Portfolio demonstrating continued professional development and ongoing assessments
10. ILS or ALS provider (appropriate to role/setting or dependent on clinical area)
11. Formal research module completed at level 7 (masters level).
12. Will work towards and complete any appropriate credential routes which are available and applicable to the clinical area

Qualifications Band 7

Essential criteria

13. Registered healthcare practitioner
14. Successfully completed modules/ short courses which are relevant to their role and are equivalent to masters level (L7) Supplemented by post graduate specialist training which may have been delivered in house.
15. Portfolio demonstrating continued professional development
16. ILS or ALS provider (appropriate to role/setting or dependent on clinical area)
17. Ability and drive to complete the MSc in advanced clinical practice successfully and attain the full AP MSc qualification
18. Will work towards and complete any appropriate credential routes which are available and applicable to the clinical area

Experience Band 7

Essential criteria

19. Extensive clinical experience in general surgery and urology working at a senior level
20. Service improvement experience
21. Change management experience
22. Experience leading a team
23. Management and de-escalation of difficult situations
24. Undertakes and contributes to criteria led discharge where this is available
25. Refers to other members of the MDT
26. Ability to assess and manage patients appropriately
27. Leads by example and is a role model to junior staff

Knowledge Band 7

Essential criteria

28. Professional knowledge acquired through a professional qualification which enables registration with a health care regulating body.
29. Evidence of management skills gained through theory and practice
30. IT literate
31. Knows the UHT values and works within them
32. Standard keyboard skills
33. Experience of mentoring and developing staff
34. Has level 6 physical assessment skills to ensure accuracy and dexterity required for clinical procedures
35. Working knowledge of the multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice
36. Ability to problem solve, analyse, compare and interpret complex information before making a decision

Experience Band 8a

Essential criteria

37. Extensive clinical experience in General surgery and urology
38. Has led audit and research within the service
39. Can manage a highly complex caseload
40. Can refer independently to other members of the MDT
41. Has led a service improvement
42. Has lead on the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and/or local policy.
43. Supports Junior doctors/nurses/AHPs to develop their own scope of practice
44. Undertakes and contributes to criteria led discharge where this is available

Knowledge 8a

Essential criteria

45. Professional knowledge acquired through a professional qualification which enables registration with a health care regulating body.
46. Supplemented by significant post-registration experience and specialist knowledge of the clinical area.
47. Management skills gained through theory and / or significant practice experience
48. Ability to autonomously problem solve, analyse, compare, and interpret complex information before making a decision
49. Mentoring and developing staff
